20. And a definite decrease in Kerry's
Media chiefs back Kerry campaign

Owen Gibson
Tuesday February 10, 2004

As John Kerry's campaign to secure the Democrat nomination - and with it a crack at the White House - continues to gather pace, it has emerged that it is being bankrolled by key executives from News Corporation, MTV-owner Viacom and Sony.

<snip>

Mr Chernin, one of Mr Murdoch's most trusted lieutenants, is among several media chiefs who have pledged to raise between $50,000 and $100,000 to support the Vietnam war veteran's campaign for the White House.

Others who have pledged to raise more than $50,000 include the Viacom chief executive, Sumner Redstone, and Sony chairman Howard Stringer, whose name has recently been linked with the vacant chairmanships at ITV and the BBC.

Most of the money raised from these contributors will have to be raised through business associates, relatives and friends as individuals can only give a total of $4,000 each to presidential candidates - $2,000 during the primaries and another $2,000 during a general election.

US political commentators have speculated that Mr Kerry has enjoyed the support of the media community in an effort to head off the challenge of Howard Dean, who has fallen back in the race despite being the frontrunner before the primaries began. Mr Dean made statements last year about wanting to break up media conglomerates.

I seem to recall a lot of Kucinich followers complaining because of how conservative Dean was.

4. Welcome all.
I just listened to Dean and as someone who did not support him I can say he is doing a wonderful thing and I am glad he is going to continue the fight. I also never thought I would be able to back him, but I will do all I can to help out his cause for the good of the party and the American people. I am glad there are some of you coming to us, we have lots of work ahead.

I, too, would not in good conscience be able to cast my vote for a pro-war, pro-Nafta, pro-Patriot act candidate, and I hope I never have to.

11. Anyone who believed the war was both wrong & terribly important
would almost have to switch towards Dennis (or Sharpton). To have supported Dean, but to now switch towards one of the pro-IWR pro-Occupation candidates is to say that you don't think Dean's stance against the invasion was really that important. Or it means that you buy into the "electability" argument - which would be odd, because Dean himself hasn't been all that electable either, for the last month or so.

22. Welcome..keep up the good fight!
I may have had my grievances with Dean, mostly due to his "Only..except* Kucinich and Sharpton" statements. :)

but...

His supporters and campaign are both amazing. Dean supporters are looking for a lot of the same things that Kucinich brings to the table.
Kucinich is a voice for the people and it is welcome to have more aboard.

Thanks,

34. I thought Dean's speech today was great-
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 06:49 PM by anarchy1999
I wish he had said more of what he said today for the last many months.

I've been firmly in the Kucinich camp since his Prayer for America speech. I'm sorry for the pain that all those who supported Dean are feeling. I wanted him to stay in to the end. But now, I will welcome anyone from the Dean camp with a hug and a kiss.

Let's take it back guys, we can do it.

I do believe we can.

What was that movie......

ummmmmm........ oh, yeah... many were talking about it,

SeaBiscuit.

The one who could not possibly win.

My problem, I've always loved underdogs and strays. They are the best though, and usually have the most heart.

On edit though, who hear remembers all those who swore never to vote for anyone that ignored Senator Byrd and instead voted for IWR. Byrd warned them all not to f'up. To not abdicate their responsibility to the Constitution they had sworn to uphold. Remember those days. I do, and I remember all of you here making those pledges, was it just in anger or did you mean it. Electability, I believe, may be in the eye of the beholder and not the media and the pundits who tell us who is electable.

43. JD, I don't know what
happened in the minds of reporters. I thought Dean absolutely ROCKED these past 6 weeks or so!

The Iowa speech was a GREAT damned rallying speech! This man knows how to speak to a crowd and fire people up, and he did a damned good job of it over the past year. I'm ashamed of having engaged in beating up on him for a while there. Unfortunately I'd have to say I let some bitterness over my own candidate's troubles overcome my sense of reason.

At the DFA board there's a thread for posting messages of gratitude to Governor Dean, so I took the time to write one. He's had too much of an impact not to write one, imo.

Welcome to the Kucinich effort to change the world. Let's hope many more of your fellow Dean supporters will see the same opportunity you've seen in supporting the Congressman. let's tell Washington we're sick of the status quo!

40. Warmest welcome to you and to all.
We WILL effect change, at many levels. Dennis is staying the course and giving us a candidate on the ballot to work for. And we know he will be working hard for change from any position he lands in. Dean is still working for change, too. Turning the mighty "Dean Machine" towards other jobs, but still working for change.

TOGETHER, we will achieve progress for our country.
