Why so many Republicans are "for" the increase in health care funding for children...
To put it bluntly, because they can have their cake and eat it too...

Especially when push comes to shove come election time next November...

There are not, I believe, enough so-called "cross over" votes to override the anticipated Bush Veto...

Don't kid yourself on this one...

There is a deal worked out between the GOP House and Senate leadership and the White House to allow this popular program to pass both Chambers only to be veto by Bush...

Bush has nothing to lose....

The only part of his legacy that he believes matters is the birth of democracy in the Middle Aast fifty years or more from now and the huge right turn the Supreme Court has taken because of his appointees...

That way, so-called "moderate" incumbents in suddenly at-risk districts can point to the Aye vote for the expansion of federally funded child medical coverage while shooting a very large wink to their bank-rollers, the guys who want to see government just go away...

Don't think for a minute that these republicans would be casting a vote for the provision if they knew it would actually be enacted...

1. Because it sounds BAD to be against giving medical aid to sick kids.
IMO, if it did not sound so Scrooge-like, the Repig bastards would not give one dang about health care for children.

2. Many folks ....
have been working behind the scenes since Feb, on this bill. I went with a bunch of other School Nurses, and we lobbied intensively. We had very good logical points as to why this is very cost effective. We met with little opposition. Our 'new' DEM's were great and more that a few GOP were willing to work with us on this. This bill is what they use to call bipartisan legislation. I know, I know....it's been a while since folks have seen the likes of this.

5. I don't know.....
but it costs so little in the vast scheme of things it is so hard to say no to it. Lot of moderate GOP know that social services has taken it on the chin for the last few budgets -we were offering olive branches on this one-a chance to do something you could go back to your district and feel good about voting for. As I mentioned the costs were moderate and it would benefit so many in need. These kids are being seen in the ER instead of the Dr office where it is cheaper and better care.

And as School Nurses, we were able to tell then first hand how this directly affects kids. I think sometime these folks work in such a vacuum that they don't realize how these things affects the lives of kids. I mean really, how many poor kids have these folks ever dealt with. And besides, as School Nurses-we can be very very persuasive.

Except for John Cornyn, all my meetings went well (he and his aides stood us up and we had an appointment.) You NEVER EVER stand up a constituent, esp when they come all the way to DC to see you. John Cornyn will not get re elected this year-he has such a sorry ass-ed voting record. All we need is a good candidate.

Even Ron Paul (that little old libertarian) viewed it favourable and met personally with our folks. We really love him here in Texas-that's why no one runs against him.
