By JODI WILGOREN

Published: February 18, 2004

MADISON, Wis., Feb. 18 — Howard Dean is expected to effectively end his presidential campaign today, a day after a distant third-place finish in the Wisconsin Democratic primary.

Dr. Dean is to appear this afternoon in Burlington, Vt., to clarify his plans, and aides said after the returns came in Tuesday night that they expected him to announce that he was abandoning his White House bid. But they also said that he would not leave the campaign trail altogether and that he intended to create a political action group that would work to oust President Bush and fill Congress and state legislatures with Democrats.

9. Me too, DR
I feel very bad for them. Two of them are neighbors, and they were ragging me unmercifully earlier on about how DK was a no-hoper, but they're mighty silent and glum the now.

3. I wasn't a Dean supporter
but if he put his energy into a grassroots effort to mobilize people around a progressive agenda, I'll get behind that 100%.

That effort was grass roots in action.

I hope that Dean won't shoot down my respect for him by endorsing a candidate with opposite views on the war, gay rights, etc. That would make his defeat even worse for all of us.
