GOP Rep. Everett of Alabama to Retire

Rep. Terry Everett of Alabama said Wednesday he will not seek re-election next year to a ninth term, adding to the growing list of Republican retirements that have complicated the GOP’s efforts to regain control of the House next year.

Everett, who turns 71 in February, said in a statement that “it is time for me to enter the next phase of my life, and pass the mantle to the next generation.”

Unlike some other GOP departures, Everett’s should not threaten the party’s hold on his 2nd District House seat. President Bush took 66 percent of the vote there in 2004, and Everett’s 69.5 percent in 2006 was about average for him.

But he is the ninth House Republican to forgo a re-election bid, with more retirements still a possibility. That will force the GOP to defend a sizable number of open seats at a time when its hopes of recapturing control of the House already appear dim.
