Rosemary Palmer slams Kucinich on SCHIP vote...
And nails it squarely on the head!!!

Statement of Rosemary Palmer on Congressman Kucinich’s Vote on SCHIP Bill

September 29, 10:40pm - I was appalled by Congressman Kucinich’s vote against the State Children’s Health Insurance Program on the House floor tonight. This bill would have expanded an already successful program to provide health insurance to millions of children across the country. It takes some twisted logic for someone who claims to support health care coverage for all to oppose this necessary and overdue move in the right direction.

On one hand, President Bush vows to veto the bill, and on the other, Dennis Kucinich votes against it because he doesn’t think it is perfect. This is a perfect example of what is presently wrong with Washington decision-making. Polarizing positions work against functional compromise resulting in a government that cannot serve in the nation’s best interest. While fringe politicians like President Bush and Congressman Kucinich rant like petulant children, the nation remains stagnant and desperately needing effective leadership. Unfortunately, children in Northeast Ohio and around the country will pay the price for their obstinate actions.

4. His usual reason...
It wasn't perfect...didn't cover legal immigrants...so rather than get 90% of the way there...he would rather we get 0% until it is perfect...something that never occurs in politics...

21. Sometimes doing the right thing is more important than seeking
more power. Actually it is better to do the right thing all the time.

19. Sorry he isn't a sell out like Hillary, I am sure you are so proud
to support someone like that.

Find one quote where Dennis says "because it wasn't perfect" about any bill and I won't consider you a liar.

14. I don't, but as a supporter (so far) of DK, I have a couple of guesses.
Of course, hopefully DK will issue his own statement. But here goes; as I understand it, the bill is way beyond what is required, and does in fact expand the program into coverage for people who probably don't actually need it. There is a LOT of extra money in the bill, and perhaps DK is upset about this "waste" of money, which appears to some to be just a way to slap Bush and force his hand to make him look bad for denying coverage to children.

We're hemorrhaging money in the US budget, and DK has been trying to do something about it. Maybe this is part of that larger vision.

Again, I don't know, I'm only guessing. I have to say, I am rather disappointed, but at this point knowing what I know about DK, I think he must have had a valid (or so he feels) reason. I'm withholding judgment until I hear his explanation.

20. It doesn't cover LEGAL immigrants?
That truly is abhorrent. But I'm in agreement that this is an important bill, and as we're constantly being told (while it rarely seems to happen), this "imperfect" bill can always be amended later.

I must say, I'm disappointed in Dennis.

Thank you for the info.

15. I went to his website, he said it's because it doesn't cover legal immigrant children.
But boy, that really does not constitute a valid reason to me.

I am severely disappointed at this.

I understand he wanted something more comprehensive, but healthcare access legislation does not work like other legislation. You do not shoot yourself in the face waiting for all the boxes to be checked. Healthcare access legislation is one of those areas where most often progress will be made in steps - once we expand coverage to the previously excluded we've got 90% of the battle fought.

Damn, damn, damn.

10. I know both Rosemary and Dennis. She lost her son in Iraq in August of '04.
Rosemary is being supported by Paul Hacket, I believe he may be working on her campaign.

She is smart and wonderful. I admire her courage. Nobody is perfect, not even Dennis. He has an interesting relationship with R- Steve LaTourette, USCong. 14th. Dennis has refused to help, support or endorse the last 2 Dems who ran against LaTourette.
