Congrats to Howard and Noble Supporters. A Great Race. Needed Heart-Burn
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 10:12 AM by WiseMen
Congratulations to Governor Howard Dean and supporters for a great campaign. His campaign gave a lot of people some heart-burn and panic – and they needed it.

I like Howard Dean. I like him because he carries on a noble tradition of populist rhetoric and he was able to get really mad.

I think that to the extent that Dean can rally a crowd to passion is good for the Party. Better the eloquence of Jesse Jackson than the precision of Dukakis. I liked the scream.

Second, I love it that Dean gets mad. The democratic rank and file felt hoodwinked, abused and betrayed by their government. Their country and their honor had been taken away. They are angry.

Hoping there is a great role for Dean in the campaign going forward to November.

2. The audacity and mad rush to "woo" are astounding.

On edit: Murdoch's rags liked "the scream" too. I guess this is why they had written and psoted the Wisonsin obituaries about how Dean had ALREADY been creamed in a land-slide before a single vote was even cast this morning.

Media chiefs back Kerry campaign

Owen Gibson
Tuesday February 10, 2004

As John Kerry's campaign to secure the Democrat nomination - and with it a crack at the White House - continues to gather pace, it has emerged that it is being bankrolled by key executives from News Corporation, MTV-owner Viacom and Sony.

<snip>

Mr Chernin, one of Mr Murdoch's most trusted lieutenants, is among several media chiefs who have pledged to raise between $50,000 and $100,000 to support the Vietnam war veteran's campaign for the White House.

Others who have pledged to raise more than $50,000 include the Viacom chief executive, Sumner Redstone, and Sony chairman Howard Stringer, whose name has recently been linked with the vacant chairmanships at ITV and the BBC.

Most of the money raised from these contributors will have to be raised through business associates, relatives and friends as individuals can only give a total of $4,000 each to presidential candidates - $2,000 during the primaries and another $2,000 during a general election.

US political commentators have speculated that Mr Kerry has enjoyed the support of the media community in an effort to head off the challenge of Howard Dean, who has fallen back in the race despite being the frontrunner before the primaries began. Mr Dean made statements last year about wanting to break up media conglomerates.

4. Yikes Tinoire. It is worse than I thought. I hope Dean endorses Edwards
actually in an ideal world he could endorse DK and give him a fighting chance.

But from my perspective blocking Kerry is imperative.

I hope Dean endorses Edwards today.

6. If Dean quits, I hope the same thing because Edwards is anti-NAFTA
disliked by the DLC and has bothered to show up for work & vote more often than Kerry.

19. Whoa! Have you looked at Kerry record of work in the Senate. Ask his
first wife or Ted Kennedy.

9. I hope Dean endorses no one
I hope he sits back, holds on to his delegates, his money and his support base and goes to convention with some leverage. It's going to be quite interesting to watch the frenzy that has already started over who gets his delegates, money and support. Funny how he was "not electable" and "mean spirited" and other such nonsense but now that shutting him out has been accomplished the scurrying rats are all falling all over themselves to get their hands on his delegates, his awesome fundraising ability and his supporters. My dads old saying comes to mind right about now. Be careful who's toes you step on today for they may very well be attached to the foot that kicks your a** tomorrow.

I guess it won't sink in until it has been repeated over 600-700 times.

11. I think there could be a real sense of accomplishment. I think a book
will be written one day not too far off, about the impact of
the Dean movement on the 2004 campaign.

17. Chapter One we didn't really get along
Chapter Two I think I fell in love with you
You said you'd stand by me in the middle of Chapter Three
But you were up to your old tricks in Chapters Four, Five and Six

No, I am not singing to you. I just had an Elvis song pop into my head, Everyday I Write The Book.

16. Agree with original message but would like to add
I really did not initially like Howard Dean one bit. I especially did not like his labelling of other Democrats as too much like Republicans. I saw it as a lack of team player spirit. I now see that it was a way of differentiating himself, but it was still frustrating to hear.

I have to say that as a candidate, Dean really grew on me. Surprisingly, as others were leaving the bandwaggon, I was becoming more and more interested in what he had to say - and still thought he had a longshot when others were writing him off.

I especially enjoyed his input in the last couple of debates - and think that in some ways he was a better candidate when he was not the front runner, and not running primarily on an anti-Iraq war theme. Looking back, it is a shame he did not shift his message earlier, to a focus on his record of balanced budgets, in the last weeks before Iowa - because he might be the front runner today. He chose to refocus his message too late in the Iowa primary, IMO.

Looking at the role the media has played, I tend to think the media targetted him early on for a great rise and fall storyline. While I was disgusted with the bandwaggon effect the media has created both for Dean and now for Kerry, I am even more appalled at the way Dean was written off after the scream. It was just one state and just one rally. Then after NH, just two states. The control of the media leaves a bitter taste.

Anyway - whatever Dean and his organization of supporters decide to do - I think he has real potential to change the party, still, and that perhaps his impact on the party has only just begun.
