I will never understand why Gore picked Lieberman over Edwards for VP...
I know that he picked him mostly because Lieberman criticized the Lewinsky affair, but wouldn't those that cared that much about it, not have voted democratic anyways?

I remember Lieberman constantly going on about morality and I would wonder, which party is this guy running on (even if his record wasn't horrible)?

I just figured, we can beat an already beaten dead horse -- maybe we can relate this to this election and how to pick, and how NOT to pick a VP.

1. at the time
Edwards had a whopping year and a half of political experience. He would've been an awful choice.

2. Because Gore's instincts are awful.
I've pretty much given up on Gore. He makes great speeches and he's a fantastic lawmaker but he's a terrible politician.

got more votes than any Democrat in history.

6. And lost an election that should have been an easy win.
Gore was a lousy campaigner. He made some horrendous mistakes that put bush in the oval office. Florida should not have been a factor.

8. Someone else who got "got more votes than any Democrat in history"
George Bush also got more votes than any Democrat before 2000. Giving this kind of kudo to Gore relies on monkeying with numbers. You could also say that more people voted against Gore in 2000 than voted against any Democrat since the disastrous Mondale campaign. Or you could say that more people voted against Gore than voted for him, a fact that continues to surprise me.

4. Given the media climate of the time ...
Edwards would have been compared to Quayle. Never mind how unbalanced that equation, the fact that is that the media would never have mentioned Edwards name without also bringing Quayle out to dangle in front of the electorate.

5. At the time of the convention,
Edwards had 18 months of political experience. He was on NOBODY'S short list of VP's.

7. Sorry, but you're way off
Gore has conceded very recently he almost selected Edwards for VP.

There was even a spoof on Saturday Night Live when Gore pulled out last year, with an Edwards lookalike in the hot tub with Gore, courting the VP slot.

9. The right pick
was Bob Graham. Gore way wary of picking him because of Graham's obsessive diary habits.

Bad desicion. Graham could have delivered Florida, which was all Gore really needed.
