Edwards echoes Obama regarding Resolution condemning MoveOn ad
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 04:31 PM by jefferson_dem
EDWARDS TODAY --
"I respect and honor General Petraeus' service, but I would have opposed the Cornyn amendment as an irresponsible waste of time -- the Senate should be working on ending the war, not dithering over newspaper ads."

OBAMA LAST NIGHT --
"I happen to believe that General Petraeus has served this country honorably. And I think it probably was a distraction to try to attack him as opposed to George Bush's policies," Obama said.

But the Illinois senator said he couldn't tolerate "the notion that at a time when we know young men and women are dying, and veterans are not being served right here at home.... We're wasting time debating about a newspaper ad."

9. John Edward's isn't a United States Senator.
His opinion is irrelevant.

12. He's a United States Presidential candidate
so his opinion is not exactly irrelevant.
It might have been nice had he voiced this opinion a little earlier though. Other than Elizabeth's statements against the MoveOn ad, this is the first I've heard from him on this.

13. Neither am I. Yet I join Edwards in disagreeing with Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

He is right about this being a waste of time, while certain DEMS along with Bush and FOX News are 100% wrong.

If only certain current DEM Senators could follow Edward's better example.

16. Is my opinion irrelevant?
Let's see....your comment about John Edwards' opinion being irrelevant is irrelevant because your opinion is also irrelevant.

Just my opinion.

He had his chance and as usual, blew it.

14. Nice try.
Your "girl" played the game...in that "system" she celebrates.

Obama (and now Edwards) condemned the fact that there was even time invested on this nonsense and refused to play.

15. I dont have a huge problem with those who abstained from the vote.
I would have prefered a "no" vote- but he has a point when he argues that the vote itself was a joke, no matter how you feel about the ad itself.

11. See- its easier to oppose Bush/media than the DLC & Blue Dog chumps would have us believe.
Fact is, they dont make an effort to disagree with Bush & Fox news on this vote because they dont really disagree with the vote.

18. The two statements do not equate
Edwards is unclear whether he would have voted No to the Cornyn amendment, if he was in the Senate, or would have walked on the vote. Here he is saying he would have done something had he been in position to do something. Is it opposing the Cornyn amendment to say you would have opposed the Cornyn amendment? (If so, then Obama's anti-war speech must qualify for those who've been defending Edwards' IWR vote by saying Obama wasn't in a position to vote on it, only moreso since it was before, rather than after the fact.) But if the Senate shouldn't be "dithering" over Cornyn, why even vote on it?

"I respect and honor General Petraeus' service, but I would have opposed the Cornyn amendment as an irresponsible waste of time -- the Senate should be working on ending the war, not dithering over newspaper ads."

Obama, on the other hand, is talking about something he actually was in a position to do and did. He walked out rather than vote on the Cornyn amendment. Obama is also much more direct (and correct) and relevant when he points past Patraeus to Bush. It is civilians who start and run wars and it is the civilians who should be accountable.

Obama also voted for the Boxer amendment which called out the GOP on swiftboating and actually had some value because of it, while Cornyn had none, zilch. I don't know if Edwards has addressed the Boxer amendment or not, if he would have voted for it or not. In my opinion the entire Democratic caucus should have voted Yes on Boxer and then walked out on Cornyn. This is what Obama did do.

I personally never understand the conflation of Obama and Edwards that is going on in the netroots. They are completely different candidates. It does them both a disservice to treat them as if they are interchangeable.
