Chambers To Court: Tell God To Chill Out

No subpoena is anticipated

September 17, 2007

What would happen if God showed up?

Senator Ernie Chambers wants a judge to order God to stop making terroristic threats and to desist in doing things that harm people and property.

Chambers said he wanted to show that a lawsuit may be filed over anything, against anyone. He was annoyed by a case filed in federal court over rulings by a state judge who ruled that some words could not be used by witnesses in a sexual assault case.

The object lesson in legalistic frivolity aside, Chambers made some interesting arguments in his request that a district judge in Omaha issue a permanent injunction against God “(also known by various aliases, titles, names, designations)…”

Alluding to the Bible and the men who wrote it, Chambers’ petition said God “has made admissions … to various handpicked, trusted chroniclers of yore regarding the making of terroristic threats and the causing of calamitous catastrophes resulting in the widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants ….”

God has acknowledged, the petition said, causing "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects, and the like."

Current agents of God, presumably all manner of clergy, proclaim that He has, does and will continue to subject humankind to such things.

Chambers asked the court “To enter a permanent injunction, enjoining the Defendant from engaging in the types of deleterious actions and the making of terroristic threats as identified and described herein.”
