3. Edwards is doing very well
Running anti-NAFTA, although I thought he was pro-NAFTA, so it's confusing to me. He's also wiping up the independents with a sponge.

That's my dichotomy as well . . .

So many 'ifs' for Clark. If Clark had done better in TN and VA, if Clark had competed in IA. Frustrating.

On Edit: Actually, people in WI are saying that Edwards is doing well b/c of perception that he's anti-Nafta, which wouldn't have really benefited Clark.

But on the other hand . . . Dems are probably more likely to be anti-Nafta, and according to exit polls, Dems are supporting Kerry more than Edwards (and Edwards is cleaning up on Independents and Repubs voting in primary).

23. Look at these results from TN and VA
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 09:44 PM by democratreformed
Overall results:
TN
Kerry 41
Edwards 26
Clark 23
Dean 4
Sharpton 2
Kucinich 1

Va
Kerry 52
Edward 27
Clark 9
Dean 7
Sharpton 3
Kucinich 1

Does this support Edwards and Clark splitting votes? I can't see it.
To me, it looks more like Clark pulling from Kerry.

7. I'm wondering how Wes would have done with
less candidates in the race. I think he would have done much better if Edwards wasn't competing. Still, I'm glad has shown so much integrity and I'm hoping he left the race without much debt and can move on with his life.

11. OK, before everyone freaks out...
1) If Clark were still in the race, neither he or Edwards would win WI because they would split the vote.

2) Only one of us could take on Kerry and Edwards showed no sign of leaving, so the only point of staying in would be to insure more Kerry wins.

3) We were losing to Edwards. We lost in the south, which is the place we were supposed to win.

4) Even if Clark won WI, they would play it down and ignore it to the point that it would seem like it never even happened. Edwards has been the media darling since Iowa. Clark was the whipping boy. You need the media on your side to get momentum, and Clark was never going to get it from them, period.

Finally, one win does not a windfall make. It's still Kerry's race to lose, WI notwithstanding.

21. Not sure I accept your #1
I believe Clark and Kerry also had strong cannibalization going on. And I don't see Edwards picking up the same percentages that Clark (presumably) would have taken; it looks more evenly distributed, with Kerry seeming to benefit more than Edwards.

WI seems to have a habit of favoring outsiders; nothing wrong with that, but it does lead to an odd spike.

Not sure at all that WI is really the beginning of a new "turn" - so I agree with your conclusion.

We'll see... Just being cautious here. :)

Look at the results from TN and VA

TN
Kerry 41
Edwards 26
Clark 23
Dean 4
Sharpton 2
Kucinich 1

VA
Kerry 52
Edwards 27
Clark 9
Dean 7
Sharpton 3
Kucinich 1

These seem to indicate Clark's support pulling from Kerry, not Edwards.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 09:56 PM by incapsulated
I was nervous when he won Iowa, because he and Clark were going after a lot of the same voters.

Once Kerry came back from the dead, Clark was in serious trouble, Edwards or no Edwards.

*edit* I also had TN and VA on my mind, where I believe there was definite vote splitting between Clark and Edwards.

17. Maybe Clark's not down for the count.
I attended the last Wes Clark for President meeting that was held in Daytona Beach, Florida. Some guy, I don't know who he was, but he was being treated like he was "connected", said that he wouldn't be surprised to see a brokered convention and Clark still has a chance. I received an email the other day that said that I should write in Clark's name on the Florida Democratic primary ballot, just to try to get delegates, if nothing else. I think a lot of people wish that Clark had stayed in a little longer, but maybe he's not completely out of the picture. Lazy media may have written Clark out, but...

20. i'm sorry he dropped out
Maybe he did what he planned to do -- draw attention to AWOL and get people excited by the Democrats again. We are the party of courage, and the other side is, well, just not exactly known for their honor and valor in combat to put it mildly. He certainly helped to get that idea across. Loud and clear. I just wish he had stuck it out a bit longer. I'm sure it's difficult knowing what to do that is best for the greater good.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 09:46 PM by truebrit71
seeing as how he was polling in a strong second place in today's primary just a week ago....

Was a deal brokered between he and Kerry to pull out in exchange for the VP nod??

It still breaks my heart that Wes is no longer in this fight, and I have a sinking feeling about the GE if Kerry gets the nomination...

Kerry is too much of an insider and Edwards is too young...you know that that will be at least SOME of the crap thrown at the fan by the rethuglicans...

Dammit all General, for the first time in your career you left your soldiers behind....

There are a lot of reasons why Clark left the race, none of them having to do with a VP slot.
