PITTSBURGH - John Edwards won the endorsement of the United Steelworkers and the United Mine Workers of America as more than 1,000 union members cheered the Democratic presidential candidate.

“America was not built on Wall Street. America was built by steelworkers and mine workers,” Edwards told supporters at a downtown Labor Day rally and parade.

4. Edwards/Obama or Obama/Edwards
Edited on Mon Sep-03-07 03:41 PM by Kerry2008
Neither are Washington Insiders or lifetime politicians. They'll represent the real change this country so desperately needs. IMO, it's the dream ticket out of the current candidates running. They'll send a powerful message that the Democratic Party stands for change, and will be the candidates that'll stand up for those who need a voice.

My first candidate is Senator Edwards. But I deeply respect and admire Barack Obama, and he's obviously my second choice. I wouldn't be disappointed with either as our nominee, and/or President.

5. Why?
What did he ever do for Labor when he was a senator?

He wasn't there for NAFTA and he voted to maintain normal trade relations with China. He also voted against the minimum wage increase in 1999 and took Antoin Scalia's son's word regarding ergonomics and voted against protecting workers in chicken plants in Louisana.

Well, at least he voted in favor of normalizing trade with Peru. :eyes:

6. Rated 100% by the AFL-CIO, indicating a pro-union voting record

8. Ummm... isn't this a list of things he SAYS he's for?
It's not a list of things he's actually voted for or against. If it is, what office did he hold this year? There are an awful lot of quotes on this site and very little by way of votes.

I have to go by his past actions because his votes in the Senate were what he's known by - you know when he could make a difference.

13. No
The endorsement could partly be due to things he says he's going to do, but, based on the link, the 100% pro-union voting record dates back to December 2003, and is based on his career in the Senate.

7. 08 could be a big year for labor issues
and Edwards seems better than the rest at addressing them.

11. I know Republicans in this area (Pittsburgh/western PA) who've said they would vote for Edwards.
He seems to be well thought of around here.

The union endorsements will be a big help.

14. That is exactly why he needs to be our nominee.
His support can cross party lines.
