Larry Craig (R-ID) arrested for lewd behavior in public restroom
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 04:22 PM by Sparkly
Is this contagious or what??

Just reported on Hardball, from Roll Call. Apparently the arrest was from June, but info is just now getting out.

Edit: Roll Call's site seems overloaded, but here's the scoop on Real Clear Politics:
http://time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/2007/08/idahos_craig_arrested_in_june.html

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig's arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a "he said/he said misunderstanding," and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, "What do you think about that?" the report states.

Craig was detained for approximately 45 minutes, interviewed, photographed, fingerprinted and released, and police prepared a formal complaint for interference with privacy and disorderly conduct.

His spokesman called it a "he said/he said," but wouldn't it be more like a "he said/they said?"

Wonder what he said, anyway!

33. 'Pervert' is a slur?
Here's the definition:

Definitions of 'pervert' on the Web:

corrupt: corrupt morally or by intemperance or sensuality; "debauch the young people with wine and women"; "Socrates was accused of corrupting young men"; "Do school counselors subvert young children?"; "corrupt the morals"

twist: practice sophistry; change the meaning of or be vague about in order to mislead or deceive; "Don't twist my words"

a person whose behavior deviates from what is acceptable especially in sexual behavior
change the inherent purpose or function of something; "Don't abuse the system"; "The director of the factory misused the funds intended for the health care of his workers"

wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

I meant no slur, I can tell you that. It has nothing to do with his being gay/not gay at all. It has to do with him being a hypocrite about it. This is a man who is a homophobe, loud and clear... who has actually literally denied gays and lesbians their civil rights. And, now he's found waving his willy at the boys in a restroom?

He's a pervert. PC or not, that's what he is!

TC

34. The word has historically been a slur used against all gays,
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 08:06 PM by pnwmom
and I believe it is still offensive.

From www.dictionary.com, Online Etymological

c.1300 (trans.), "to turn someone aside from a right religious belief to a false or erroneous one," from O.Fr. pervertir, from L. pervertere "corrupt, turn the wrong way, turn about," from per- "away" + vertere "to turn" (see versus). The noun is 1661, from the verb. Replaced native froward, which embodies the same image. The noun is attested from 1661, "one who has forsaken a doctrine or system regarded as true, apostate;" psychological sense of "one who has a perversion of the sexual instinct" is attested from 1897 (Havelock Ellis), originally esp. of homosexuals. Perv, short for sexual pervert (n.), is first recorded 1944.

37. I think someone who looks for sex in a bathroom is a pervert.
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 09:38 PM by DesertRat
I don't think that being a "pervert" has anything to do with being gay. So now it's a "slur". I didn't get that memo. And neither did my brother who is visiting me today and who happens to be gay.

Definitions of pervert on the Web:
corrupt: corrupt morally or by intemperance or sensuality; "debauch the young people with wine and women"; "Socrates was accused of corrupting young men"; "Do school counselors subvert young children?"; "corrupt the morals"
twist: practice sophistry; change the meaning of or be vague about in order to mislead or deceive; "Don't twist my words"
a person whose behavior deviates from what is acceptable especially in sexual behavior

38. I agree
I am very far left (by US standards), but I definitely think that lewd behavior in public restrooms should be illegal.

41. You and your brother may be too young to remember, but I'm not.
At one point, "pervert" was used in the same way that "faggot" or "queer" were used. It was used for any gay man, because all gay sex was considered abnormal.

42. I'm 51
I remember a flasher hanging around outside our college dorm who would open his coat to reveal his naked self to coeds. We nicknamed him "the perv". I guess I never associated pervert with being gay.

I think that the Repubs and their odd sexual proclivities (diapers, bathroom sex, etc.) have redefined the term pervert for this generation!

44. I'm about your age,
and my father was gay when it was considered a mental illness (hence, "perverted") at best, and criminal at worst.

And when the vast majority of gay men were closeted, there was probably a lot more activity in hidden places -- bathrooms, parks, "bathhouses", etc. -- than there is now. At least I hope that is true.

I'm hopeful that you did because of your word "although" in the text.

I appreciate the welcome. Any chance you might want to follow me around and make sure I don't drop all my prepositions? I'm guessing not. I'd probably at least have to buy you dinner first. LOL. Thanks for the helping hand and the welcome. Typical Dem!

48. That's how being gay is viewed here in Idaho, where I'm from.
Most of the gays don't run around in public being as open as they would be in San Francisco, for example.

This year's Gay pride parade was the largest yet - 500 people marched in Boise.
But, you know for a state of 1.5 million people, there's got to be more gays living here than that.

Idaho is like a state lost in time - we are living with all of the modern technology of the 21st century, but the majority here still hold viewpoints about morality that has never left the early '50's.

22. Haven't there been rumors about him for a while?
Guess they just got confirmed.

I do feel sorry for his wife. If she didn't already know, what a way to find out. Either way, she's dealing with public humiliation.

29. Remember Dina McGreevey -- the wife of the Dem. Gov. of N.J.?
She was in the same situation. and she's written a book about it.

According to her book, she called HRC in the midst of the crisis, and Hillary gave her some supportive advice.
