Why Chertoff is a Good Idea
So the word is now that Gonzo has resigned. And Michael Chertoff is set to take his place. So, why does the Bush Administration think this is a good idea? Any ideas?

Could it be that the Uber Security Chancellor is taking over Justice because it will be easier to hide details of the illegal domestic spying programs? After all, Chertoff's fingerprints will be all over this issue so why would he want it investigated?

Hopefully, Congressional Democrats will enquire further about Chertoff's role in these programs during his Ascension, err, I mean, nomination.

2. I don't think this was planned. I think Gonzo is running away from Shrub.
And I don't think Bush likes it. So I hope he decides to do what he always does to disloyal toadies: throw him to the wolves.

3. Frankly, I don't think the Dems should approve any Atty Gen'l for Bush.
As long as Reid follows thru with his promise to hold a special session at least every 10 days, * won't be allowed to make a recess appointment (I believe the Senate has to be out of session for 2 weeks for him to be allowed to do so).

I say they should reject everyone he throws their way for the next 18 months. Let him dangle on his own with no one left to protect him. There are plenty of career professionals in the Justice Department who are perfectly capable of doing their job without the likes of Fredo as a "leader" telling them what to do and what NOT to do.

This could be a very very good day for America indeed.

4. No
there's no defined limit on when a recess appointment can occur. They've occurred during recesses as short as 2 or 3 days.

Although every time I say something like that, they prove me wrong.

...the thought of Chertoff as AG scares me half to death!

Y'know how it always goes from bad to worse when the Bush administration replaces an unpopular cabinet member. When we bitched about Ashcroft, they gave us Gonzales. Who knew it could be worse than Ashcroft? Well, we found out that yes, it CAN be worse.

As to why they think it's a *good* idea, I say that as bad as Ashcroft was, there were some things he simply couldn't bring himself to do. He was loyal to his Bush bosses and helped them get their Patriot Act, but the illegal domestic spying thing was where he drew the line (from his hospital bed, no less). Even Ashcroft wouldn't go there.

So they replace him with Gonzales, who was more than happy to oblige. Could it be that there are things on the agenda that even Gonzales won't do? Holy crap, that sounds frightening, but it makes me wonder...

Chertoff seems like a loyal bootlicker who is up for anything. When I look in his eyes, I see a robot, a bottomless pit devoid of human emotion and understanding. So whatever it is BushCo has planned for us as their grand finale', I think Chertoff is the man who is happy to help them bring about The Final Solution.

As the old blessing (or is it a curse?) said: "May you live in interesting times." Well, could the times get any more interesting than this? The question is - what are we going to do about it?
