A tidbit that tells me Wes Clark will not run this cycle, many people's hopes notwithstanding
http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/08/26/vineyard_welcomes_another_clinton/

When his stalwart Hollywood friends, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, are out in favor of another candidate, that kinda seals it. They were(are?) die hard Clark supporters. And here they are, out for Clinton.

From a Boston Globe article with today's date (emphasis mine):

~snip~

The senator from New York, who is vying for the Democratic nomination for president, headed to the island yesterday for a fund-raising reception at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs, where more than 2,100 paid $50 for an event where Carly Simon sang and actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen were masters of ceremony. Scores more sat in lawn chairs outside the pavilion, where the campaign sold Hillary Clinton T-shirts, bumper stickers, and posters.

~~snip~~

The 'island' in the article is Martha's Vineyard.

1. unitl he officially announces -- what choice do they have but to
campaign for their second choice?

this does not mean anything, imo.

3. I'd say that was true for anyone but these two.
They're pretty close personal friends with the Clarks. I can't imagine they'd be out for anyone else if he'd not signaled something.

I take it as meaningful. But I hasten to add that my take on it is no more or less speculative than yours.

7. That didn't stike me when I read the article ... but you could be right.
I've long speculated Clark is high on everyone's VEEP radar.

10. as well he SHOULD be ---
if nothing else cheney has showed us how powerful this position can be. no matter who i think about on top of the ticket i want clark on their. he balances the ticket out no matter whose name is on top. that is the way i see it, anyway.

2. By far the biggest problem for Clark in 04 was starting too late. If he were seriously going to
contemplate running this time, that's the ONE mistake he would have corrected right off the bat, IMHO.

4. Mary Steenburgen is from Arkansas
So there are ties to both Clinton and Clark. I don't know if it's strictly political or if there are ties of friendship with the Clintons, probably, but the Clarks are close to Steenburgen's family. If they've officially endorsed Clinton, I doubt they would shift even if Wes got in, though.

5. Yup .... and the tighter the ties, the more plausible that they know Clark isn't running.
I also doubt they'd shift their support of Clinton to Clark. The fact is, their endorsement means damned little more than yours or mine. And that is another reason I take this as a reason to end any speculation that Clark will run. Their connection to him is personal.
