How will republicans vote?
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 01:17 PM by LWolf
While I didn't think this was about the primary, it mentions Sharpton, so got locked in GD. Repost:

I live in a hardcore, heavy-duty, defense-industry-driven republican stronghold. My local paper is filled daily with letters to the editor. Praising Bush, blasting everybody else. If you want to hear the worst neocon excess, don't bother with free republic. Just pick up my local paper.

Today, I was graced with this letter; it was long, so I'm snipping to the big point. I'd include a link, but my local paper doesn't include letters to the editor on its website.

<snip>

I have never voted for a Democrat for president in my life, but this time any opponent of the president will get my vote, even an Al Sharpton. This is only due to our president's thoughtless and needless risking of the lives and families of our military and countless other innocent lives that created even more enemies for us in the future.

It is the conservatives who vote for restrictions of individual freedom like same-sex marriages, abortions, euthanasia, drug use or obscene language, but they do not vote to ban glorification of violence in print or movies, and, in this case, we're first in war.

I think this irrational war is going to be the defining issue of the coming protest election. George W. created his own enemies. May they overcome him, albeit too late.

1. On Saturday
my husband was volunteering at a JayCees event wearing his Kerry for President button. He heard the same thing, in our right-wing conservative community..."I've never voted Democratic but I will this time". Our local paper, very conservative, has been filled with "anti-bush" letters for the last 6 months.

2. It's not how they vote that concerns me,
it's how they COUNT the votes.

3. I think most of the conservatives will be voting
for the Democratic nominee. They hate Bush.

4. don't be so sure
While alot of repubs are mad at Bush, they will still be voting for him because they view him as the lesser of the 2 evils. What we should do is convince them of how good Kerry(or whoever gets the nomination) is and how they will make their lives better

5. I am seeing more and more of that.
Since that is the case, shouldn't we cast aside the fear that we cannot beat him, and make the priority in our primary nominating the best man, rather than who might be able to "beat" him? This life-long conservative...and I've been reading his letters to the editor for 20 years now, says he will vote for the democrat, "even Sharpton."
