embarrassed to be republicans...
I thought I'd just make some people's day a little better, perhaps. I thought I'd share that I saw a panel of historians on CSPAN talking about Presidents (they were biographers).

After the Democrat historians got done talking up James K. Polk (and another, I cannot remember for the life of me) and bashing on W, the panel turned to two Republican biographers.

Both were Republicans (Mickinley and Hayes biographers), and both said they were "embarrassed" to be Republicans right now. On national tv (or at least on CSPAN).

I sensed their disgust at W's disregard for the international community. I think these are going to be the types of Republicans we'll get in November.

6. I agree
I'd say he'd go down as a terrible President, but I'm still not convinced he is the President. Nonetheless, I think your 1000% right.

History is today! But tomorrow busy little wingers will be rewriting how That Monster Clinton had set Little Lord Bush, despite W's best intentions, for a fall.

11. St. Ronnie
Presidents get re-evaluated all the time. Eisenhower has recently gone up. But look at the cannonization of St. Ronnie lately. I think you're right, Clinton will be remembered as evil for a while until people objectivley go back and look.

17. Yeah, look at HST
When Truman was alive, he was regarded as one of the worst presidents we ever had. But, after he died in 1972, his cred went way up. Now, he's a hero to both Democrats AND Republicans.

But I have a feeling Reagan will be reevalutated again fairly soon, after he dies. That seems to happen a lot with ex-presidents. Look at Nixon, for example. He's been mostly rehabilitated, and he was a flipping crook, fergodsake!

4. I tuned in right at the tail end of that comment
I wasn't quite sure if I'd heard it correctly. A lot of the crowd was smiling and clapping, and then there was one sourpuss old guy giving the thumbs down. Loved it!

7. That was Kevin Phillips making the ashamed to be Republican
comments - he talked about McKinley. Phillips wrote the book American Dynasty, among many others.

The other Republican, was John Dean, legal counsel for 1000 days to President Richard Nixon.

14. Aren't Phillips and Dean hardcore conservatives?
I'm sure that Dean is very right wing.

15. A Bit of Insight
Don't know about Dean's leanings, but he's been all over every legal misadventure of the Bush administration. I don't get the idea he's very conservative any longer. You can usually read one of his columns each Friday in FindLaw's Writ section: <http://writ.findlaw.com>

As far as Phillips goes, he still identifies as being conservative, but he despises the Bush administration and the Bush family in more particular terms.

18. Maybe at one time Dean WAS right-wing
but since the political dialogue in this country has moved so far right, he's seen as moderate to liberal these days.

After all, Nixon was the one who created the EPA, signed the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, and proposed a National Health Coverage program back in 1972.

16. You can read his articles at
Findlaw.com. He has many thoughtful articles on many subjects and is a thinker. I would not call him right wing, at least in his writings. But, then again, I like to read all sides of all issues.
