Rep. Emanuel Cleaver Endorses Clinton For President

UPDATED: 5:36 pm CDT August 21, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Emanuel Cleaver on Tuesday backed Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, though he said the decision wasn't easy.

"The crowds turn out to see Barack Obama because he is a personality, but the polls show Mrs. Clinton continuing to move away from him in terms of public opinion," Cleaver said. "So, what people are saying is, 'I want to see him. I want to hear him, but when I make a decision about who I'm going to vote for, it's Hillary Clinton because she has the experience.'"

Cleaver is one of several prominent Missouri Democrats who have already declared their allegiance to one of the presidential hopefuls.

>

Cleaver predicted that Obama eventually will become the first black president of the United States, but he doesn't think it will happen in 2008.

"It's not the right time for him to win," Cleaver said. "It may be the right time for him to get his name and his considerable skill out in the public arena."

>

Cleaver endorsed former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards for president in 2004. But he goes back even further with the Clintons.

The Reverend Emanuel Cleaver II (born October 26, 1944) is a United Methodist pastor and a Democratic politician from the state of Missouri. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in November 2004 to represent Missouri's 5th congressional district (map), which primarily consists of the Kansas City-Jackson County metro area.

Cleaver took his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives at the start of the 109th Congress on January 4, 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas, Cleaver grew up in public housing in Wichita Falls, Texas. After his graduation from Prairie View A&M University, Cleaver moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He founded a branch of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Kansas City and received a Master of Divinity degree from St. Paul School of Theology. Cleaver served a city councilman in Kansas City from 1979 to 1991, and was the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri for two terms, from 1991 until 1999. He was the first African American mayor of that city.

Cleaver is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter organization established for African Americans.

3. He didn't seem to help Edwards all that much
Kerry got 51%, Edwards 25%, Clark and Leiberman 4% each, Dean 9%, Kuchinich 1%. This was right after NH and Iowa. That day in fact is likely when Kerry became an overwhelming favorite winning states that you would not expect a Massachusetts Seantor to get.
