Alaskan Volcano to Erupt Soon - Air Travel Advised of Danger
Talk about ice melt....

http://news.aol.com/science

Satellite images of Pavlof Volcano taken Thursday showed strong thermal readings, consistent with what the Alaska Volcano Observatory is calling a "vigorous eruption of lava" at the volcano about 590 miles southwest of
Anchorage on the Alaska Peninsula.

The volcano is below the path of hundreds of daily international flight paths, and an explosive eruption could interrupt those operations, said Steve McNutt, a volcano seismologist with the observatory. Volcanic ash can enter an engine and make it seize up, he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration sent advisories to airlines that might be operating in the area and is monitoring the situation, said spokesman Allen Kenitzer. If there is a severe eruption, flights would have to be diverted, possibly resulting in delays, he said.

McNutt said seismic activity is high at the 8,262-foot volcano, with about one tremor recorded every minute. Lahars - mudslides caused when lava melts snow on the peak - have triggered some seismic activity, as well, he said.

9. Mt. Spurr and Augustine are the ones to be seen from Anchorage.

Also Mt. Redoubt in 1989. Anchorage has been dusted a few times since I've lived here.

10. Well it was a cone shaped thing. Iliamma was the only name I
could recall but Redoubt also is a name I recall once you said it. I left the state in 84 and do not recall any dusting while I was there but do recall reading about them later on. It sure was a hard state to leave. I just loved it up there.

11. Iliamna's a volcano, but I don't think it's erupted since

the 1950s. It just kind of steams now and then now. I think the last really good eruption we had that impacted Anchorage was Spurr in '92. It was a beautiful sunny day, and then we saw this huge black cloud coming up in the west like a gigantic thunderhead, the sky turned yellow and then the ash started falling like very, very fine snow.

I remember a pretty significant Augustine eruption in 1976, too, that made kind of a mess. The ash from the eruption last year blew off the other direction so it didn't affect us much here.

3. If we toss a virgin in it, will all our problems go away?
Maybe we could get single-payer and chimp-cheney would disappear.

NOAA AVHRR satellite image showing a strong thermal anomaly observed at the summit of Pavlof Volcano taken August 16, 2007 at 07:50 AM AKDT (1550 UTC). In this image, white colors represent hot temperatures. These data are routinely provided within minutes of acquisition to the Alaska Volcano Observatory by both the UAF-GINA project and the National Weather Service - Gilmore Creek station.
