USE LINE PAPER: Your grandparents to their children (aunts and uncles) to their children who are all first cousins. Put all of these cousins on one line across. On the next line put the names of their children. These are second cousins to each other. Put all of these peoples children on the next line down and these are third cousins...just keep going down 16 places. This is where it gets interesting...
You are on the top line with the first cousins, what relationship is your first cousins grandchild to you? First cousin, twice removed. Take the common relative line, as the # cousin, then count down how many lines to the person and what line are they on? that is the # removed.

So, then you would have to know which is on line 16 and who is on the 19th line from that person, Bush or Kerry. Will be studying this tomorrow. You do know that Barbara Bush is related to the Queen of England?

OK, I'm still confused. Let's say that every marriage produces three kids, and somehow Bush and Kerry are somewhere in there. How many people would have to be invited to a family reunion in order to ensure that both Bush and Kerry were there, without skipping any of the links which connect them? Are we talking like 5000 people, 100,000? 1Million?

I've got no idea. I'm a darwinist so I kinda think I'm related to everybody.

just using 2 children as the average, there would be over one million people at that picnic. The story (featured on Drudge!) is talking about them being 21 generations apart at least. If someone really looked into it they could probably find more recent links between Bush, Dean, and Kerry. They are all descendants of 17th century New England Puritans, for example.

something with a product to sell: genealogy databases on CD-ROM. I don't know if they're any good but I'm a skeptic because I've seen books full of family trees that aren't much use. You buy one for your surname and find the people listed have no relation to you that you can document. Hardly helpful.

If I start working on my family tree again, the first thing I'll investigate will be all the records accumulated by the LDS (Mormons) and now online.

A few years back, I found a number of instances of people with the surname Elam (a very common name and the surname of one of my sixteen great-great-grandparents) marrying someone with my husband's rather unusual surname, so I think I can prove us to be much closer cousins than Bush and Kerry are. Kissing cousins, though! ;-)
