Predict the '08 Presidential Nominees
Not saying this is my preference - just my guess, at this point, of what the November ballot will come down to:

Democrats: Hillary Clinton
Republican: Mitt Romney
Independent: Mike Bloomberg

I'd predict a Hillary win under those circumstances.

As for running mates? Probably Tom Vilsack for the Democrats. For the Republicans, they'll want a Southern governor or senator alongside Mitt Romney; maybe Haley Barbour (governor of Mississippi). For the Bloomberg ticket, maybe former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn (who was quoted a few days back talking up a third-party bid by Bloomberg) or former Dem. congressman Tim Penny of Minnesota.

1. My predictions
Democratic Party: John Edwards, with Dennis Kucinich as his running mate. Running on a Working Man's Platform

Republican: Fred Thompson, with Guliani or Romney as his running mate. Running on "I'm the 2007 version of Ronnie Reagan"

Independent: Mike Huckabee with Tancredo for a running mate on some Religious Right party. This one I'll talk up as I see it taking votes away from the GOP.

Unity08: Two independents, as I don't see any serious Democrat or Publican leaving their party to run. Bloomberg has the money, so he has a shot--but since the nominee will be done by the members of Unity08, who appear to run the gamut from extreme liberal to extreme conservative (despite saying they are centrist), who knows?

2. I agree
First time I saw Romney speak, I knew. I knew it was Kerry a year out. I still worked for Dean hoping. It's Hillary. I'm just an old hippie hoping.

3. My bias makes it impossible for me to be objective about the Dem nominee
Edited on Sun Aug-12-07 06:11 PM by Hippo_Tron
Also, Democratic Primaries, unlike GOP ones, are extremely unpredictable and are very much prone to front runners collapsing and upset candidates taking the nomination. On the other hand, we've never had a former first lady running.

As far as the GOP goes, I think it's going to be Mittens. Thompson could possibly take it, but my initial impression is that he is too lazy to do the campaigning necessary to win. The insiders and the money seem to be leaning toward Mittens which is a much bigger deal in Republican primaries than it is in Democratic primaries (where it is still a big deal). Giuliani isn't going to get passed the religious wrong. They are the foot soldiers that do the work in the early primary states and he won't get any of their help.

4. bloomberg?
I think Bloomberg will only get in the presidential race if polls show him winning. He will not go in to play spoiler or to get a point/issue across. (like Nader or Buchanan)

In the end I think Bloomberg will NOT run for president in 2008.

7. I think he's less likely to run if Obama's the nominee
I think Bloomberg will figure he has a chance if neither major party candidate seems to be a "new face" or a break with the past. I don't think he'd run against Giuliani, either. With Hillary (as the Dem nominee) and/or Romney or Thompson as the Republican nominee, I think he would.

I think in such a race, Hillary would win with just over 40% of the vote, with the other two taking about 30% each. I don't know that Bloomberg will take any electoral votes (although if he comes close to 30% it'd be unlikely for him not to).

20. Bloomberg
is just as likely to take votes from the Democratic candidate as he would from the republican as he has fairly liberal social viewpoints.

5. D--Hillary R--Romney I--Bloomberg/Hagel. In short, pretty much your list.
Edited on Sun Aug-12-07 06:14 PM by wienerdoggie
Edit--running mates: Hillary: Obama Romney--Huckabee or Thompson (get that Southern Christian vote) Bloomberg--can't see anyone but Hagel right now, but that could change.

14. At this early point, I'd only predict if I had a gun to my head
But with all the gun nuts around (I'm in Texas at the moment),
I can't discount the possibility, so, as it stands now:

(and this is my prediction, NOT my preference):

D:
Hillary for president
Surprise choice for VP, maybe Wes Clark, maybe someone not yet on the radar,
but not one of the current presidential contenders.

R:
Thompson for president
Huckabee or some Quayle-like ventriloquist's dummy for VP,
unless Gingrich worms his way into it, figuring he can be
another Cheney, pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

I: Nader again. He just likes to see his name on TV too much.
He'll figure there is enough anti-Hillary sentiment out there
to get himself a few followers (and he'd probably be right),
but not enough to influence the outcome this time. Besides, Howard
is starting on prevention of election fraud NOW, and not waiting until
after the election.

I don't think Bloomberg will feel like it at the end of the day,
and Hagel might want to be Rep. leader of the Senate when they
finally figure out that Old McConnell really should have a farm, e-i-e-i-o.

This is this week. Ask me next month, and it might look completely different.
It already looks different to almost every poster here. Get that stupid gun
away from my head, and I'll predict that whatever I just said will look
like total horseshit even to me by the end of November.

18. Edwards or Obama will win the Democratic nomination ~~~~

I think you're 100% right that Bloomberg will be the Independent running (if an Independent runs)

And I'm amazed actually that so many DU'ers are certain Mitt "I spent $1,261.00 per vote" will with the thug nomination. I say they go with the droopy-jawed deadbeat actor in the end.

19. Hillary, Rudy and no Bloomberg
Hillary with Richardson as running mate although I think Obama will grab it if Hillary has even a slight stumble. I don't think there is any way Hillary would chose Obama as a running mate. Republicans will opt for Rudy when they see he can win. Hucklebee would likely be his running mate. Bloomberg will not run.
