Thompson had made clear in the lead up to the poll, a fundraiser for the Iowa Republican Party, that a first- or second-place finish was necessary for his campaign to remain viable. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, respectively, took those spots.

Given the results, "it would be extremely unlikely that he would continue" in the race, Thompson campaign manager Steve Grubbs said. He said an official statement would be released today but that Thompson had no public appearances planned for the day.

Thompson did not stay at the Iowa State Center for the announcement of the results, which were delayed 90 minutes because a hand count was required on one of the 18 machines. Grubbs said he phoned Thompson with the results and that Thompson was "surprised and disappointed" by his showing.

"He worked hard enough to have done better," he said. "He left everything on the table.

1. Tommy's problem was he didn't have anything to offer. And he made
some incredibly insensitive, bigoted remarks as well.

My guess is that Republicans participating in the straw poll took one look at him and dismissed him as the extraordinarily untalented, clueless man he is.

4. Would it really matter if he was going full steam ahead?
He's barely a blip on the radar.

5. Don't worry, they'll be recruiting him to run against Russ Feingold in 2010
And Russ will proceed to wipe the floor with him.
