Did Sludge really damage himself?
Probably not. Wingnuts are so deeply into primitive defense mechanisms like denial and projection that they don't seem to notice the clay feet of their idols. Jimmy Swaggart. Jim Bakker. Tammy Faye. Bill Betonit. Newt. St. Ronald. OxyRush. Tarbaby Sludge himself. I mean, fer cripesake, when your whole business is lying and hypocrisy, being caught out once in a while is just an occupational hazard. My prediction is that Sludge will carry on printing what he gets from Rove, and they'll go on believing it.

He was right about the Devil with the Blue Dress, remember.

1. he'll be treated as a martyr for this story
because the "liberal" media has "villified" him for reporting a rumor that "Clark" started.

Best,

3. And by blaming Clark
he keeps the GOP from being pinned as the story's source.

4. It won't stop him
But I sure as hell won't believe any garbage he prints about Kerry, and the mainstream media might be even more reluctant to repeat it.

6. It's all in how the Dems play their cards now...

They should make "Drudge" a synonym for poor reporting and false rumours and innuendos.

If we play our cards right, we can do for Drudge what "Savage Love" did for Santorum.

7. Why would this time be any different?
He's done this shit several times. Why do people think he was set up anyway? Have people forgotten how many times he has done something like this?

So he was right about the Monica Lewinsky story. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

9. Exactly... and why should I respect Drudge
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 05:20 PM by eileen_d
for breaking the Lewinsky story in the first place? Does he merit a badge of honor for doing that? Is that story an important contribution to journalism in service of democracy?

Are these rhetorical questions? Yeah.

13. As I said yesterday, of course Drudge got the Monica story first.
He is best buds with Lucianne, who got Linda Tripp to set up Monica and Bill. They sure wouldn't give the story to Dan Rather.

That doesn't make the alien and Nostradamus stuff he does accurate.

10. Why did Clark mention an "Intern scandal" first?
That's what I want to know.

11. Clark didn't - his campaign has officially denied it.
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 05:23 PM by eileen_d
That was one of the many bits of misinformation (or disinformation) in the story.

20. Wrong. At least two of ten reporters stated...
Clark said the "Intern scandal" as an off-the-record statement so it is a bit hard to prove or deny. Why would reporters lie about an off-the-record statement?

23. Why would reporters REPORT
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 09:57 PM by Jackpine Radical
an off-the-record statement? That's what "off the record" means. You don't report it.

12. What I've read is that he didn't mention an intern scandal...
..but that he made a few comments about the "bachelor" days between Kerry's marriages. Overheard, misinterpreted, you know the rest.

16. I think he referred to the stories in the National Inquirer
and said that if any of it was true he would implode. I didn't see the stories in the Inquirer. Did they mention an intern ?

14. He didn't
A WaPo reporter who talked to the reporters present when Clark spoke said none of them heard Clark say anything about an intern.
