As much as I'd like to see Pete Demedici retired, I think it'd be better to see Bill Richardson step into the VP job. (Assuming that the Presidential nomination is now out of his reach, but, who knows?) I believe he's the ONLY one in the Presidential field who's actually gone to Pyongyang and negotiated with Kim Jong Il. The experience he's built up working in behalf of US interests abroad is valuable. As VP, he'd be able to get our standing abroad back where it should be.

He Loses the presidential race, decided to run for Senator
He wins a bruising campaign....and Quits the Governor's job.
The LIetenant Governor steps in on Novermber 8th
And a month after the election Richardson quits the Job he was elected to serve xix years before he takes the oath of office to become Secretary of State.

The new Governor would likely be forced to call another election.

I'd like to see him as VP, especially for someone like Obama who's weaker in the foreign policy area. But I think he'd be more suited as SecState. I think he'd be awesome as either one.
