Under pressure from President Bush, the House gave
final approval Saturday to changes in a terrorism
surveillance program, despite serious objections from many
Democrats about the scope of the executive branch's new
eavesdropping power.

President Bush signed into law on Sunday legislation
that broadly expanded the government's authority to

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham
Clinton refused Saturday to forsake campaign donations from
lobbyists, turning aside challenges from her two main
rivals with a rare defense of the special interest
industry. "A lot of those lobbyists, whether you like
it or not, represent real Americans, they actually do,"
Clinton said, drawing boos and hisses from liberal
bloggers at the second Yearly Kos convention. Despite
their own infatuations with special interest money,
former Sen. John Edwards and Sen. Barack Obama put
Clinton on the spot during a debate that featured seven of
the eight major Democratic presidential candidates.
They fielded questions from a crowd of 1,500 bloggers,
most of them liberal. The gathering marked another
advancement for the rising new wing of the Democratic
Party, the so-called netroots.

The Republican presidential candidates walked a
delicate line in their latest campaign debate, seeking some
distance from President Bush and an unpopular war in
Iraq while offering assurances of change in a new
Republican administration.

The Pentagon has lost track of about 190,000 AK-47

fallen into the hands of insurgents fighting U.S. forces
in Iraq. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20137021/
Lindsay Lohan has checked into the Cirque Lodge drug
and alcohol treatment center in Sundance, Utah,

Bonds gets chance to hit 756th at home. 'There's no
pressure on me to do this right away,' star says ahead
of game. Tying Hank Aaron's record on the road lined
up Bonds to be crowned the home run king in his
Northern California comfort zone.

Brian Johnson said it's "hard to dispute" that former
teammate Barry Bonds cheated by using
performance-enhancing drugs. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20137810/

Glavine becomes 23rd pitcher to win 300. 'I think the
feeling right now is probably relief,' Mets' southpaw
says. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20137930/

That's some of what we're planning for tonight.

A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil
removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her
whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it
caused, Bild newspaper reported on Monday. Margret Wegner
fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was
four. At the time no one dared operate, but now
technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able
to remove it. The majority of the pencil, some 3.1
inches long, was taken out in an operation at a private
Berlin clinic, but the tip had grown in so firmly that
it was impossible to remove.
