Ethics Questions Plague Other Alaska Senator
.......In the tradition-bound Senate, there was no public criticism of Mr. Stevens by Democrats. Several Republicans issued statements of support for Mr. Stevens, 83, the longest-serving Republican member in Senate history.
The minority leader, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, was noncommittal when asked if he would request that Mr. Stevens step down from his committee appointments.
“I’ll certainly be discussing the matter with my conference, but I don’t have announcements today to make with regard to that,” Mr. McConnell said.
The majority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, while saying he knew nothing about the Stevens investigation, said: “My personal feeling is that we have to be very careful about punishing people during an investigation. Many investigations go nowhere.”
