Massive lead for Clinton as Obama trails in US polls
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article2826188.ece

By Rupert Cornwell in Washington
Published: 02 August 2007
Hillary Clinton has further extended her lead in the race for the 2008 Democratic nomination, amid fresh evidence that voters see her as more experienced and more competent - especially in the foreign policy field - than her closest rival, Barack Obama.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC poll yesterday underlined what political pros here have long been saying. The first primary may still be more than five months away, but despite the excitement generated by the youthful Mr Obama among the party's liberal activist base, the nomination as matters stand is Ms Clinton's to lose.

and have a strong showing in Iowa, then he'll be on his way to the White House.

2. I know you love those ARG polls yesterday...
Wouldn't get to attached to them....

3. That's why he's starting to intensify his campaing in Iowa.
You know, I feel quite confident Obama will get either the president or VP slot. He's the future of the Democratic Party, and he won't be denied.

19. Its weird. He has spent 3x as much as Edwards, has twice as many offices, key endorsements,...
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 11:01 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
...and more staff than Edwards yet he is barely beating Richardson and lags well behind Edwards and Hillary there in most polls. He is doing well in NH and SC but for some reason his message has not resonated in Iowa.

18. He has a good chance of being on the ticket
I think if Edwards wins he will be forced to pick Obama as VP, just as Kerry had to pick Edwards. So even if Obama does not win if Edwards does I think he will likely make it onto the ticket.

12. Sorry I had not seen that. Obama beats Rudy 45-40.
Obama has really made some strides in catching Rudy (who was his only GOP competition really).

13. Then there's this important sentence in the article
"In Iowa, Mr Edwards is narrowly ahead, while Mr Obama is in a virtual dead heat with Ms Clinton in New Hampshire and South Carolina."

The first four states will set the stage for the February 5th voting. National polls based on name recognition at this point are fun, but fairly meaningless...

16. Except of course in deterring turnout and influencing votes
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 08:55 PM by Morereason
Looks to me like misinformation. I have seen several of these and they are all based on innapropriate samples. Why is the media doing this and placing such definitive headlines on these stories. Feels like they are again trying to choose our leaders for us. Media stinks

20. Yes, but Iowa will influence NV/NH, which will in turn influence SC
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 11:03 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
If Obama finishes 3rd in Iowa he in trouble; if he finishes 4th he is for all intents and purposes done as a presidential candidate (although he could still run for VP ;) ).

17. A lot of African Americans still do not know who Obama is. BET
did a question and answer session last week. 1 out of 10 people said they knew who he was. Like Eugene Robinson said, Obama is finally getting to be known in the African American community. His numbers will gradually rise as they find out about him.

22. This is why I know Gore will run.

How ridiculous. First, I doubt the polls. Second, give me a break. Nobody is excited about this
other than some idealistic college students for Obama, students I compliment for their interest
in politics.

Neither candidate really gets much more than a yawn.

Gore will come in and clear the field.

23. I have been very disappointed in Obama's negative
campaign. I do not like all the negative campaigning against Hillary, it bothered me. It so appeared as if Hillary was worse than Bush, according to some. I just got so tired of it. Hillary is not perfect, by no means, but she is so much better than Bush. I will vote for a Democrat against any Republican. Anyone who runs for president has to get millions to run, if not, it is impossible. We need "real" campaign finance reform. All campaign funding should by paid for by tax money, all candidates receiving equal funding. We should also be able to watch "real" debates, not the absurd ones of the past. This could make if possible for a candidate to be able to run of their merits. We have Bush to prove that something needs to change ASAP! Damn, we got a very retarded criminal for president who did not even win an election!
