Arming The World For Peace
Arming The World For Peace

There are times as I watch President Bush attempt to more heavily arm the world in the name of peace, I feel as if I just won Titanic's Shuffleboard Championship. It is quite an accomplishment but soon profound events will supersede my celebration and render it meaningless.

Throughout history, when people receive the most powerful weapons, they use them. This was true for the cross-bow, true for poison gas, true for dynamite, true for the machine-gun and true for the atomic bomb. There are no exceptions. Every horrific weapon ultimately gets used.

And here's another rule history teaches us. Today's allies often become tomorrow's enemies and today's enemies often become tomorrow's allies. For example, Nazi Germany, Japan and Italy were America's arch enemies during World War 2, and Russia was a close ally. Then as Germany, Japan and Italy became close U.S. allies, Russia became the Cold War arch enemy with whom we nearly fought a nuclear war.

During the Vietnam war, we prepared for war against "Red China," who we had already fought during the Korean war. Today, China and Vietnam are U.S. allies.

Saddam Hussein in the 1980's was a U.S. ally and in his war with Iran, the U.S. heavily armed him. In Afghanistan, the U.S. heavily armed the "freedom fighters" who were trying to overthrow their Russian occupiers. Now the U.S. calls those "freedom fighters," "terrorists." and is trying to annihilate them. They include Osama bin Laden, Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

As I read "Bush seeks big boost in arms for Mideast allies," http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20003692/ and "U.S., India reach civilian nuclear deal," http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19995001/, I am horrified that the U.S is now actively trying to much more heavily arm the world, in the name of peace.

And as I considered President Bush's "antimissile defense system," he's determined to install near Russia's borders a missile system easily converted to launch missiles on an "enemy," I wasn't surprised that Russian President Putin is livid, and accusing the Bush Administration of relaunching the Cold War Arms Race.

Mr. Bush says that his "antimissile defense system" is necessary to protect Eastern Europe from nuclear attack from Iran, which has no nuclear weapons. But in the 1970's had the Shah of Iran, a U.S. ally, stayed in power a little longer, Iran would have had nuclear weapons, given to them by the U.S.

Mr. Bush invaded Iraq because of their non-existent "weapons of mass destruction," and you can witness the horrific results his "war on terror" has brought the world. Rather than learn his lesson, he now threatens Iran and is trying to distribute his own "weapons of mass destruction" across the globe in the name of peace.

If this makes sense to you, and brings you comfort, you don't have to do a thing, for this is what is happening. But if you are like me, horrified by what is taking place, raise your voice in opposition.

Unless it is stopped, the U.S. like the Titanic, is heading full-speed into an iceberg. And don't fool yourself, it could sink us all.
