UPDATED: National Urban League - Edwards was not booed
Edited on Sun Jul-29-07 10:36 PM by jsamuel
There is a post here that says Edwards got booed by the National Urban League.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3412880

I was not there, but I question the report by the sun times.
http://www.suntimes.com/news/mitchell/487943,CST-NWS-mitch29.article

Sometimes when a crowd boos, they are not booing the speaker, but agreeing with what the speaker says is bad. I really don't know what happened, but I think it is very possible that it was the fight between Obama and Clinton that was being booed as Edwards criticized it when the crowd booed. That seems much more likely as crowds very rarely boo a candidate for something like that. However, without more information, I really can't say for certain.

UPDATE:

Turns out the SunTimes account is bogus. Here is what ABC had to say about it.

"If you're looking for what's wrong in Washington, why the system is broken, why the system doesn't work, one perfect example is what's been happening just over the course of the last four days," said Edwards, who spoke before Clinton and Obama.

"We've had two good people Democratic candidates for president who spent their time attacking each other instead of attacking the problems that this country is facing," Edwards said to a mixture of groans and applause.

"I got your attention with that one," he added.

This account shows that the crowd reacted positively when Edward criticized the fight.

5. It sounds right
Why would they boo Edwards for that, it doesn't make sense otherwise. They must have been booing the Clinton- Obama fight, in truth actually agreeing with what Edwards was saying!

7. Exactly. Team Obama has come out guns blazing against Edwards...
...since the latest Iowa poll and Edwards closing in on Obama in the national polls after the debate...

12. They'd boo Edward if they thought he was being hypocritical
in trying to gain political points from the fight between Clinton-Obama. It makes no sense that the crowd would boo a disagreement. That just isn't logical.

15. sure it is
If it was a Dem crowd they very likely could not like Hillary and Obama's making nasty with each other.

I think the OP's guess is the closest to reality.

6. The reporter was there and said Edwards was booed
I've never heard of a crowd booing in order to express agreement with the speaker. My guess is that it was just a handful of people booing. Probably nothing to get worried about.

They're just booing Cheney or Bush.
I highly doubt they would boo Obama and Hillary, who are very well liked among the crowd.

14. They would be booing the fight, not Obama and Hillary.
They would be expressing agreement that Cheney is bad.

"Dick Cheney says he is awesome."

BOOOOOOOOO!

20. Yep - we should trust
what reporters say, they get it right so often, don't they?

Actually there is no indication the reporter that wrote the article was even there. As we should all know reporters often do stories on events they don't personally attend - stories are often built from a collection of sources, not from first hand experience.

13. Ahhh, Chicago, Obama's home turf :)
Funny it was noted that Kucinich got the most enthusiastic applause, that can't be good for the hometown kid?

ABC news had his statement:

"If you're looking for what's wrong in Washington, why the system is broken, why the system doesn't work, one perfect example is what's been happening just over the course of the last four days," said Edwards, who spoke before Clinton and Obama.

"We've had two good people Democratic candidates for president who spent their time attacking each other instead of attacking the problems that this country is facing," Edwards said to a mixture of groans and applause.

16. Kind of interesting
right after the booing section in the article, they mention the standing ovations:

"The four Democratic candidates were warmly received (none of the Republican primary candidates appeared), and the audience rose to its feet at the end of each presentation."

so doesn't seem like it mattered much regardless

I find it amusing how zealously Team Obama has been attacking Edwards since the Iowa poll came out last week. Some of the very same people were pronouncing his campaign dead prior to last week. ;)

Im sure the clip will be on youtube or CNN and turn up sooner or later, and everyone can see for themselves.

I think Team Obama better not write off Edwards too soon, they might be unpleasantly surprised.

21. Edwards attacked Obama and Clinton because they "attacked" each other
Somehow Edwards' logic to attack them for attacking each other seems a tad vapid to me.

If Edwards wants to remind people of his vote to authorize the Iraq war while knowing the intelligence was bullshit AND co-sponsor the legislation with everybody's favorite former Democrat, Joe Lieberman, then he should do just that.

If he wants to attack others for them attacking each other, he surely is walking down a road he may not want to.

As for the booing, who cares.

Just because the ABC account doesn't say there was booing (even though it does mention groaning)? Do you now think the crowd was groaning at the Obama-Clinton fight?

Has the mainstream media found its newest lie about John Edwards?

A Chicago Sun-Times news report claims that John Edwards was booed recently at the National Urban League presidential forum when he criticized the recent spat between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. A video of his comments, however, tells a different story. It's clear from the video on CNN's website that he was mostly applauded, and although there may have been a few groans or shouts in the audience, they seem as likely to have been in agreement with Edwards about the futility of the Clinton-Obama spat as otherwise.
