New investigation sheds light on clique of powerbrokers, including Prescott Bush, who sought to overthrow U.S. government and implement Hitlerian policies

A BBC Radio 4 investigation sheds new light on a major subject that has received little historical attention, the conspiracy on behalf of a group of influential powerbrokers, led by Prescott Bush, to overthrow FDR and implement a fascist dictatorship in the U.S. based around the ideology of Mussolini and Hitler.

In 1933, Marine Corps Maj.-Gen. Smedley Butler was approached by a wealthy and secretive group of industrialists and bankers, including Prescott Bush the current President's grandfather, who asked him to command a 500,000 strong rogue army of veterans that would help stage a coup to topple then President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

According to the BBC, the plotters intended to impose a fascist takeover and "Adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression."

I played the BBC report yesterday. It's incredible.

The report says that Granddad Bush, JP Morgan and others like them barely escaped treason charges by making a deal with Roosevelt.

The deal was that they would not oppose the New Deal and Roosevelt's Economic Bill of Rights if the Justice Department would stop pursuing treason charges against them!

Then there's the issue of Bush's financing the Hamburg Line, a German shipping company. Technically it was not illegal at the time, but would have been only months later when an act of Congress declared trading with Germany to be illegal.

This is a "must-listen" for millions of U.S. citizens who haven't heard the report yet. I hope it gets reposted at DU many times.

5. Two books and a comment about CT

These two books detail the plot. "The Plot to Seize the White House" by Jules Archer and "War is a Racket" by General Smedley Butler. Both available for around $10 from the usual sources.

Connecticut...Prescott Bush was a US Senator from CT in the (IIRC) late '40's or the early '50's. Yes, the very same state that blessed us with Joe LIEberman. WTF is up with THAT? :puke:

9. At the time this story broke, back in the 30's, Smedley butler was called

a crank and just about everything else under the sun, because he refused to back down from the reality of the whole affair. While the ringleaders were off relatively scott-free, Butler raised a fuss about the whole thing, saying they tried to enlist him in overthrowing the government. He was seen as "nuts", but he never backed down.

Smedley, awarded 2 Medals of Honor while in the USMC, had decided that previous administrations had sacrificed his Marines in an attempt to corner the banana market, hence his famous "War is a Racket".

There are newsreels of him at a desk exposing the whole affair, but he was muted over a short period of time.
