Wow...Hillary Clinton labeling herself a progressive?

Talk about dog whistle politics. Doesn't make her one, but surprising nonetheless.

over the past 15 years....today, we Progressive, Dean supporters, we helped coin the updated term in 04 Campaign.

I think you're own to something TC. Modern Progressives believe in: NAFTA, more money for corporate donors, unprovoked war, and me, me, me.

Doesn't matter a wit. Words are cheap; everyone has them.

54. I know I am "onto" something....
The messaging of words and meanings of words and the symbolism of words is nothing new to this camp.

Wasn't it Bill who tried to explain what the many meanings of "is" was?

"New Democrat must've made people uncomfortable in that last focus group, but they responded better to "Modern Progressive", no doubt. Only someone as close to my own thinking as you would have "gotten" my meaning. ;)

All I can say is Heaven Help Us if this woman is our candidate. Whether she wins or loses, I feel it will be the beginning of the end for the United States and the Democratic Party as we know them.

the fact that you discount the possibility that you are wrong tells me all I need to know about how you process information ...

34. She came of age as a Liberal and I think that defines her essential nature.
But as she aged she has become pragmatic. She has to appeal to the middle now if she is going to get elected. The middle moderates are the ones who got The Moron elected in 2000 and 2004 so they have to be courted and cajoled.
Of course, if she does win we'll have to watch her like hawks.

37. That is a concern.
I confess to having drifted rightward during that period myself. I was still left of center but had let my Mother Jones subscription lapse. But events of the last 7 years (actually by 2003) were like a bucket of ice water and I was jerked solidly back to the politics of my youth. (No, I didn't become stupid enough to vote for Bush. I suspected he was a last minute substitute for Dan Quayle, the previously assigned patsy to serve as the face of the Neocons but who turned out to be even too stupid for that.) Mrs. Clinton doesn't have my vote yet but if she wins the primary I'm not going sit it out because she isn't pure enough.

47. It depends at what age you come of age
She was a Goldwater Republican when she left high school. The small government and individual rights fit that. The comment that dealt with community would be the liberal part.

I think a better answer would have been that labls rarely fit a person's entire political belief system - which from her description seems true of her. It makes more sense than making up a new label.

52. Hillary started her political life as a Goldwater
girl...Barry Goldwater was a REPUBLICAN candidate in 1964. Her family was REPUBLICAN.

She and Bill Clinton took REPUBLICAN ideas such as welfare "reform" and NAFTA and made the Democrat ideas and platforms. Hillary doesn't have a left leaning bone in her body. She supports unfettered free trade via NAFTA and for profit health care via Hillary Care, which would have left the insurance companies in charge of our health care.

Dennis Kucinich is the ONLY true progressive candidate running as a Democrat. With Dennis you know what you are getting. There would be no "hoping" he takes a left turn.

Stop supporting the corporately chosen candidate and support the REAL progressive, Dennis Kucinich!

66. He would if people would stop drinking from the
DLC and corporate kool aid. This devotion to a triangulator, free trader, pro corporate health care person such as Hillary is beyond my understanding.

Look who she dragged out yesterday to attack Barack Obama for his lack of foreign policy experience, "miss collateral damage" herself, Madeleine Albright. Just as I am not happy the same crowd that was in power in the 1980s is in charge, so I would not be happy if Ms Albright was called upon to issue foreign policy advice.

People are nostalgic for the Clinton era because Clinton could tie a coherent English sentence together. As for serving the ruling elites in this country, not much difference between the policies of the Clinton era and those of the Bush era.

With Dennis Kucinich we would get REAL change and it would benefit REAL people instead of only those who live in the "good" ZIP codes
