Giuliani talks tough in Council Bluffs
BY ELIZABETH AHLIN
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

COUNCIL BLUFFS — A western Iowa audience gave Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani a warm welcome Wednesday, cheering his views on immigration and terrorism.

The crowd of about 100 was friendly throughout his address and offered booming applause when the former New York City mayor criticized Democrats who are pushing to designate a pullout date from Iraq.

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani speaks at Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Council Bluffs, pledging action against illegal immigration and terrorism if he is elected.

"Americans should remain on offense against the terrorists," Giuliani said. "You don't go on offense by running away."

The crowd was a mix of Giuliani supporters, regular Republican caucusgoers and the simply curious. They restlessly awaited Giuliani's arrival at the gymnasium of Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Council Bluffs.

It was Giuliani's first appearance in Republican-rich western Iowa since launching his presidential bid.

When Giuliani took the stage, he was greeted with a standing ovation. He quickly launched into a speech on the importance of appointing federal judges who would be "strict constructionists," adhering to the Constitution rather than making law from the bench.

1. You don't go on offense by showing up at the wrong stadium and playing the wrong team, either.
STFU, Rudy.
