D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty announced Tuesday his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama's bid to be the Democratic Party's nominee for president in 2008.
Fenty will also serve as chairman of the Illinois senator's D.C. campaign.
"Barack Obama is the candidate that can reach across party lines and inspire pride in our government again," Fenty said in a statement.
Fenty added that Obama has said he will help D.C. get representation in Congress.
"Senator Obama has committed to empower those who have been locked out of our political process for far too long," Fenty said.
Fenty's endorsement is in anticipation of Obama's speech July 18 at the Thearc at 1901 Mississippi Ave. SE, where Obama will lay out his urban poverty agenda.
