John Kerry picture was doctored! Rightwing smear machine kicks off!

As a 20-year-old photographer documenting the country's struggle over the Vietnam War, Ken Light snapped the picture of John Kerry at a peace rally in Mineola. It captured the future senator alone at a podium, squinting into the sun.

Light did not photograph Jane Fonda on that warm June Sunday in 1971. The actress, who is reviled by many Vietnam veterans for her vocal stance against the war, did not even attend.

But when opponents of the Democratic presidential hopeful began e-mailing Light's picture to one another four days ago, it depicted Fonda standing by Kerry's side. The photo had been doctored.

"I'm horrified," said Light, 52, who grew up in East Meadow and now heads the graduate photojournalism program at the University of California at Berkeley. "I think this kind of alteration is probably one of the scariest forms of trickery, particularly when it's done against a political candidate."

The first photo out was an anti-Nixon rally where kerry just happened to be in the background of a photo of Fonda. As if the Dem's can't find photo's of GW near "unsavory" people...

Someone over at FreeRepublic photoshopped the Kerry/Fonda pics together, then started an email blitz. After it started making the rounds and was posted on NewsMax they started emailing everyone telling them it was a fake - which is when NewsMax pulled it.

They had a whole thread about it. I don't think, based on reading the thread, that they intentionally set out to have people pick this photo up as real - they just thought it was "funny" to have the pic, period. When it WAS picked up, they went into overdrive trying to contact those online posting it as real and have it pulled.

What I find interesting, is that even if only subconsciously, they've got the RW propaganda methods down pat. Float a BS story, picture, etc - get it printed in all the headlines, then post a 2 sentence retraction on page 12, buried between used car ads. This is how the RW works - which is why we still have people thinking the Clintons vandalized the White House and looked Air Force One - or that Ken Lay slept in the Clinton White House.

that was the story - that it was fake - not that Kerry and Fonda sharedd a stage an there was a little doubt, but that the charges against Kerry are trumped up dogshit. Another photo which shows Kerry three rows behind Fonda at an antiwar rally was also debunked - it was taken two years before she did the Hanoi thing.

I highly doubt its a fake, but you never know. We know - its part of the Rovian dirty trick schematic - and its only just starting - we have to approach all news these days with skepticism - a lack of it cost the nation a lot in the decision of a close election in 2000 - lets avoid that in 04.

One shows Kerry with Fonda in a photo that's said to be genuine. The other photo doesn't show Fonda at all.

I'd still like to know why neither Kerry nor Fonda disavowed the photo if it's fake - not that it matters to me; I like Jane Fonda.

Another thing I need to research is the story about the young lady Kerry allegedly hit on, or whatever. I read that her parents think Kerry's scum, but the article didn't explain what he did.

My perception is that alll of these stories are garbage, but I'd still like to see the "doctored photo."

There ARE two photos, as another poster pointed out already.

One is fake (the one where he's standing write next to her while she's giving a speech).

One is real (the one where he's sitting several rows back from her at some event).

When I hear "the John Kerry photo," I tend to think of the second one. But the first one apparently was printed in the NYT. The second photo was taken a few years before Fonda went to Vietnam, so it doesn't really mean anything anyway.
