In light of today's loss, I was thinking about Lyndon.
It sure seems like we could use his wisdom and political acumen today. He was a 'win at all costs' kind of guy. Sure, he had that Viet Nam thing, but in the end, he saw what it meant for the country and had the basic decency to not seek reelection. Apart from that, we have much to thank him for.

I love the line attributed to him (I am not sure he said this, but it sure as hell could have been him!). Speaking of an opponent, he told his team to go call the guy a pig fucker. When reminded it wasn't true, Lyndon is said to have replied, "So what? Call him that and let's watch him deny it."

Johnson was a guy who knew how to win and knew how to keep his party in line.

He was successful to be sure, but that was several generations ago. What do you think? Should we try to be more like in this day and time?

4. Here's a little reference to the tale ......
DID HE OR DIDN'T HE?....This story may or may not be true, but legend has it that during one of Lyndon Johnson's congressional campaigns he decided to spread a rumor that his opponent was a pig-fucker. LBJ's campaign manager said, "Lyndon, you know he doesn't do that!" Johnson replied, "I know. I just want to make him deny it."

2. For all his faults
we owe the passage of Civil Rights Bill to him.
Thank you for the flowers, Lady Bird and thank you Lyndon for Civil Rights Bills!

12. Not only the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act as well.
Also don't forget about Medicare.

Vietnam was a complete disaster as we all know, but Lyndon's Great Society was the last vestige of FDR's New Deal.

I know this blasphemy on DU, but LBJ is on my list of favorite Presidents.

As for Lady Bird, even though my childhood friends and I would mock her Texas accent in the 1960's about her Beautify America program, she always was a very classy woman. Pickles could learn some lessons from her.

8. He probably can barely remember who she is.
I wonder if he ever even met her, even though she lived near Austin on the ranch for the longest time.

13. Cheney
Cheney should. Lady Bird and her family owned Brown & Root, which, during the Vietnam War provided services similar to its successor's (Halliburton's) in Iraq.

6. I remember hearing about his conversation with the tailor about
needing the rise in his pants fitted properly. He was calling from the Oval office. Here's a link to an audio file: http://www.poormojo.org/pmjadaily/archives/001536.html

10. That's so funny it brings tears to your eyes.
I can't recall if it was PBS or C-span who played hours and hours of his tapes. That gem was among them.

He was quite something.

You know, his race against Goldwater was quite something. Two titans from another era. Both men, in my estimation, were as honorable and caring as can be imagined. Very different views back then, but both were honest men.

How low we have sunk.

He played to win!
