Shortly before Congress began its July Fourth recess, some senior Democrats called a news conference to review their party’s accomplishments during its first six months in power.
Behind them stood a large blue board with the phrase “Republican obstruction” printed 33 times.
Blaming Republicans for blocking the Democratic agenda is just one aspect of a three-pronged strategy Democrats plan to follow as they enter the critical final months of the 2007 session hoping to live up to a wide range of campaign promises.
In addition to pointing an accusatory finger at the GOP, Democrats are planning to revive debate over Iraq and push again for a troop withdrawal timetable. The move is aimed at pressuring more Republicans to turn away from the Bush administration on the war.
The third element is a legislative agenda that includes a laundry list of less controversial initiatives dealing with children’s health care, higher education, housing, lobbying and homeland security.
