2. I am very uncomfortable when politicians talk to me about faith and religion
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 11:52 AM by Skip Intro
Talk to me about concrete actions you plan to take as president, here in reality, and leave my soul to me. As long as you plan to protect the separation of church and state, and the right to worship or not, then the faith discussion should be over.

This isn't directed at Obama specifically, but all candidates. The pandering to the religious, whoever is doing it, just doesn't sit well with me. What has anyone's faith got to do with governing the nation and protecting the Constitution and our rights and freedoms, and, in fact, expanding our rights and freedoms? I'm waiting for one of them to explain the true meaning of Christmas for me.

4. Why would one give a speech on the Constitution at the United Church of Christ convention?
He's giving a "faith" speech because that's the venue at which to give a faith speech.

6. This is why I am NOT voting for Obama.
I realize that agnostics/atheists are only 10 to 15% of the
population.

I don't hold his religious views AGAINST him. I just don't
appreciate him EXPLOITATION of those views for political
gain.

STOP IT, Obama.

7. He is speaking to members of his church. What's wrong with that?
He has been a member of the UCC for over 20 years. The Church invited him last year to speak. He's honoring his commitment to attend the event.

8. There is a BIG difference between:
What? He's just speaking to members of his church. What?.....

and:

"Watch LIVE: Barack Obama to Deliver Major Faith Speech at 11:30am PST, 2:30pm EST Today"

Don't you think?

10. The church asked Obama to talk about Faith and Politics
The invitation was from last year asking Obama to talk about the intersection of faith and politics.

12. I disagree, you can learn a lot about a person w/ these speeches. Faith covers things like poverty,
AIDS, importance of families, etc. I am not religious, but you really get to learn about a candidate's position on various issues.

Issues of faith are relevant to all of us; it doesn't just mean talking about Jesus and the Bible.

14. He is not exploiting his religion.
He was asked to give this speech over a year ago, before he even decided to run for President. How is it he is using it for political gain, if they asked him to speak a year before?

9. I miss Jimmy Carter
He was/is probably the most truly religious of the last few presidents, his sister was a professional evangelist, and he was studious about keeping religion out of politics and his political rhetoric.

Now, faith has been so forced into the social realm that it inundates everything.

If we mobilize "our" faithful to help beat "their" faithful, the end result will be that faith is necessary for government, which is the exact opposite of what our founders intended.

It'll be interesting to see how this sorts out.

11. Faith, faith, faith, faith, faith - I'm sick of hearing about it.
Religion used to be a private thing - like a person's sex life. Why can't we go back to that?

13. Exactly why I couldn't support him...
or most of the others. I absolutely do not want to hear them bleating about "faith".

The more they talk about it, the more it sounds like a political talking point (which it is)!
