Poll question: Which candidate would Bloomberg's entering the race hurt the most?
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 02:49 PM by spooky3
I realize it would be better to ask about three-way races (Bloomberg plus one Dem plus one Repub) rather than two-way (Bloomberg plus one of either). But that made the poll way too complicated for the ten options here, for me anyway. Also, who knows whether he will enter, and whether it will be after the Dem & Rep nominees have been chosen? So I am asking:

if you don't know the opposing party's candidate, who has the most to lose if Bloomberg enters the race?

Sorry if I omitted your favorite candidate or the one you think has the best shot; I had to stop at 10 choices.

Comments welcome.

1. I asked my son

who lives and works in NYC how he felt about Bloomberg entering the race. He said it was fine as long as it took votes away from Giuliani.

We shall see. He's got the money and he doesn't come across as the crackpot Perot did. And Perot ended up with nearly 20% of the vote.

2. Because he was an R , he'll take more from the independent, embarrassed to be R's
Those are the ones who will vote indy; the ones who feel completely embarrassed by the Reps. They bought into the lie for the past 8 years, and are pissed.

3. Other: no effect on either party's primary but would ultimately hurt the Democratic nominee
because pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights, anti-war Bloomberg isn't going to win any measurable amount of support from anyone who was otherwise likely to vote Republican. Most specifically, for potential voters who don't find our candidate "likable" but who would hold their nose and vote for her or him anyway rather than voting for a Republican, Bloomberg will give those swing voters a face-saving alternative to voting for a Republican, and to the extent our nominee has significant likability problems, Bloomberg will be a significant vote siphon to that same degree.

4. If any flat earther like Huckabee, Brownback or Tancredo
gets the nod for the top office, then Bloomberg would devastate that party by deepening the split between old Republics and religious fundy Republics. The split is there and all it will take is one more nutbag candidate to turn it into a chasm.

I can't imagine why anyone would vote for Bloomberg in place of any Democrat, but I imagine bigots won't vote for either a black man or a white woman so he could possibly hurt either Clinton or Obama.

5. Edwards--Bloomberg won't get into the race if Giuliani is still the frontrunner by October.

Edwards because he's the more Progressive of the big three, and has the least "star power" to combat all of the media hype Bloomberg will be sure to get. Bloomberg's ideal position is right between Thompson/Romney and Edwards.

Edit to add: I blame Thompson's rise in the polls for Bloomberg starting to make his move.

6. Bloomberg would hurt the one to whom his politics
most closely agree.

Since Hilary is in the Lead at this time, Bloomberg's
politics are most closely aligned with HRC.

Bloomberg was a Democrat for 44 years and simply joined
the Republicans to become Mayor.

There were too many Dems running.
