hannity's choice of music
sean thinks its cool to play martina mcbride's "Independence Day" because of its "let freedom ring" lyric. And we all know only conservatives can let freedom ring. However, the song is about a little girl who burns her house down because her father abuses her mother. The little girl is then sent to the "county home."

Similar to reagan using Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" as if it were some cosmic conservative anthem. Just two more examples of "conservatives" knowing their targeted audiences extremely well.

1. They can't help it if their attention span can't last a whole song.

Jeez. They just like the ONE sentence! Isn't that enough?

2. And the opening music was a popular piece with Nazi audiences
No, really. Carmina Burana is that operatic theme music written by Carl Orff.

Although Orff's relationship with the Nazi party is disputed, Carmina Burana was hugely popular in Germany after it's debut in 1937.

3. I've always found it absolutely creepy that so many RW ers play
progressive artists.

If it creeps me out I can't even imagine how the artists feel.

I only know that Rush uses a Pretenders song from Franken's old "dittohead" segment.

Chrissie is or has been a PETA activist. That's just plain weird.

6. Their consultants tell them which songs to play
...as well as which callers to let on the air. The intent is to give their show a gloss of hipness. It's why you don't hear too many callers on those shows who sound like they're old retired guys.

All this came out a couple years ago when a RW consultants' memo was leaked.

7. I think Bruce Hornsby protested his music being played on Hannity's show
But there was nothing he could do about it.

4. let us not forget "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"
he loves singing that at his Cretin Concerts. He must have practiced for days memorizing the lyrics.

He is so proud of this accomplishment.

5. I'm pretty sure it was the little girl's mother who burned the house.
The lyric is:

"Well she lit up the sky that fourth of July by the time the firemen come they
Just put out the flames and took down some names and send me to the county home"

Note the lyric says "SHE lit up the sky," but the firemen "send ME to the county home."

The song is sung by the little girl from her point of view.

Either way, your point about Hannity is exactly right. I thought I heard that Martina had complained about him using the song as his theme.

8. Rush uses the guitar bits from "My City Was Gone" by The Pretenders
Which, according to lead singer, Chrissie Hynde (as well as simply listening to the song), is about environmental concerns. Limbaugh, however, thought it was complaining about problems associated with America leaving behind "conservative values." He used it for years without permission but now pays royalties to the lead singer, who donates the money to PETA.

23. I always thought that was a smartassed bit by Rush
because Chrissy Hynde, from what I know, is about as far from his BS as you can get politically.

I'm not a big PETA fan but I know that she is and it is good that that fat pig is even indirectly giving to an organization such as that.

9. The song that confuses me is, "Kiss Me," by Sixpence None the Richer
Who is essentially a contemporary Christian band that crossed over into mainstream pop, and it's supposed to be a song written by the male member for his wife, but with the woman member singing it, it sounds like a lesbian love song as I can't picture too many wives telling their husbands to "wear those shoes" or "bring your flowered hat," and the person singing the song (remember - written by a guy for his wife) will wear "that dress" if the other person wears "those shoes."

Kiss me out of the bearded barley
Nightly, beside the green, green grass
Swing, swing, swing the spinning step
You wear those shoes and I will wear that dress.

Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So kiss me

Kiss me down by the broken tree house
Swing me upon its hanging tire
Bring, bring, bring your flowered hat
We'll take the trail marked on your father's map

16. I think that was sixpence None The Richer trying to straddle two different trends...
of the 90s: Jesus "rock" and trendy lesbianism

18. That's interesting
I never listened closely enough to the lyrics of "Kiss Me" to notice that they seem to be addressing a female.

It's interesting because the group's other big hit from that album was a cover of the La's "There She Goes", which would definitely seem to be addressing a female. However, I remember reading that that song is actually about heroin, and not about a girl; if that's true, then the whole "hinting at lesbianism" thing wouldn't apply for that one, although I'm sure most people still interpreted it that way. Now I'm kinda curious what the story behind the addressing-a-female angle on those songs is, or if there even is a story...

19. What's even more ironic is...
That the single "Independence Day", upon its original release, wasn't able to make the Top 10 on the country charts (which by that point were based solely on airplay) due to some conservative radio programmers not playing it due to its "rabble-rousing" message.* It has since become perhaps Martina McBride's best-known song, but it's pretty damn ironic that Bush ass-kisser extraordinaire Sean Hannity is giving endless airtime to a song that failed to reach its full potential on the charts due to conservative radio programmers not playing it due to its "lib'rul" message!

* I've been searching for a link discussing this, but haven't been able to find one. I'm remembering it from some half-hour special on CMT or GAC that I saw a couple of years ago where they focused on the controversy surrounding the song, and discussed how some DJs refused to put it into rotation due to its message. A similar thing happened to Garth Brooks's "We Shall be Free" during the same time period. Because of its message of tolerance (no, seriously...), certain stations became wary and it became Garth's first single to miss the Top 10.

24. McBride is a "friend of the show" Hornsby did ask him to stop using his song
but it is back. I have no idea how or why.

Hornsby is a good guy by the way (from three degrees of seperation).

McBride has been on Hannity's show and she does his concert almost every year. I used to listen to Hannity because I don't have satellite radio therefore it is the only real comedy available.
