Poll question: Did you contribute to anyone in this campaign? Was it the first time?
In assessing one aspect of the Dean campaign's impact to campaign 2004, I am wondering how many donated to a candidate for the first time ever. I know I did. And it is mainly because Dean's campaign showed just how damned important it is.
So it's really very simple- there are only 3 choices:

1. I've volunteered in the past
For Jerry Brown, back when I was a broke-ass college kid. But this is my first time donating $.

2. This was the first campaign of any kind I contributed to (except some in-
kind phone work to a friend running for sheriff).

So far, our household has contributed to three presidential candidates, a county exec race, at least two congressional candidates (plus one defunct candidacy)... and more will come.

3. Rucky, my only other campaign donation was
Jerry Brown as well.

haha. I am also a student, so when I give I mean it.

This year I gave to Kucinich. The campaign worker I spoke with told me that DK has the greatest number of individual donations of any candidate -- small amounts, but more people.

5. Donation to candidate
Wes Clark inspired me as no other candidate has since John F. Kennedy when I was 18 yrs old. This is the first time since then that I have thought of a candidate for President as the best possible choice, not just the "least worst". Needless to say, I am very disappointed that he has withdrawn from the race to the WH.

6. I first donated in 2002
to Bill Bradbury (for Oregon Senate), Paul Wellstone, and Walter Mondale. We all know what happened to the last two. Bradbury lost, too.

At least it felt good to know that I wasn't just sitting back and letting a hypothetical "someone else" do the heavy lifting.

This year I've donated a couple hundred bucks to Kucinich and volunteered as well.

7. First for me.
DK is the first candidate I felt strongly enough about his election to spend both money and time. I think I'm at about $320 mark with three more automated $50 donations upcoming. I may make another special donation since I previously set my cap at $500.

Go Dennis!

8. For the first time
in my 50 years of voting I gave to Howard Dean. I am more impressed with him than anyone I have ever seen and I am not easily impressed. I was a Gore supporter and probably would have voted for him again if he had run, but Dean is the answer no matter what happens. I blame the media for his decline. It seems that Kerry is the lead dog right now and I will vote for him if he is the nominee.

12. None of this was new for me
But this time I did make contributions to multiple campaigns: Clark most of all, Graham, Kucinich, Edwards, and Dean. I'll be contributing to Kerry, now that Wes Clark has gotten behind him; Ben Chandler in Kentucky and Charlie Rangel in NYC, because they supported Wes and need the help.

13. This was my first time
ever donating or getting involved with a political campaign. Clark has inspired me in a way that no one else has ever come close. I put more money than I feel comfortable saying into that campaign, both in direct donations, and indirectly, through the money that I spent on our house party.

I don't regret a single penny of it either, even though Clark did not end up getting the nomination. I am happy, and proud to have directly participated in grassroots democracy, and proud to have done everything I could for such wonderful candidate. I would not do anything different if I had it all to do over again.

18. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't do anything different either
except maybe dig in my pockets a little deeper and give a little more to Wes Clark. At the time, I felt that I was giving what I could, though. And my time was indeed time very well spent.

14. I donated time
to the Carol Mosely Braun's Senate campaign making phone calls, but not money. I donated money to Dean's campaign, but Wes Clark is the ONLY candidate to inspire me to donate $4000 ($2000 for me and $2000 for hubby), write 900 letters, make phone calls to Iowa, attend a fundraiser and get in the car and drive to Tennessee and spend 3 days working like crazy for his campaign. First time ever to be involved in a campaign and.....

I will NEVER do it again unless it's for Wes Clark. No one will ever inspire me the way Wes did and I will never be so stupid as to think "We the people" are in control of our election process....because we aren't. The media and Washington insiders are. I feel like an idiot for being so blind.

15. Another first time donor here.
And there's no way in hell I'll give to the Party itself nor to John Kerry. My heart and my money went to Dean. And will stay there.

I am going to send money today to a woman running for Senate here in Kansas against a Republican incumbent.

19. Not my first time, by a long shot.
I never have much money to give, but I generally give something, $25 or $35.00.

I worked for Bobby Kennedy, before I was old enough to vote.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Dean impact. We have only begun to see the use of the Internet for campaigning and disseminating political information. I am glad we are ahead. By the next election, the repukes will probably have it figured out.

20. Clark
This is the first time I have donated money to any campaign in the 23 years I've been eligible to vote. Although I've always been interested and involved to some extent in campaigns at all levels, I've never actually given money before.

I ever donated $$ or time.

First time I ever registered with a political party.

I registered for one reason only:

Dennis Kucinich.

28. I have volunteered frequently in the past. I even set up a non-profit
group to create a "street" cred for a candidate.

This year I donated to Clark. The only other candidate I have even sent money to was a personal friend of mine who has dedicated most of his life to making things better for his neighbors in Coney Island in Brooklyn.

Clark is not a personal friend of mine but I felt much the same towards him as I did towards my friend. If I wasn't living on a fixed income I'd have given more.

29. I donated for the first time in the 2002 election
to Chellie Pingree and Jeanne Shaheen. Then donated to Clark and will donate to the nominee. Never donated to Democrats before because I was skeptical that the party was fighting for regular people. I sure hope they will in the future, but at any rate, getting rid of Bush will be well worth the money.

33. First time in primary (Kerry). Not first time in general election.
I've contributed to Democrats in the past for general elections... but not nearly as much as I will this time!!!

Dean's campaign inspired me to donate to Kerry 6 months ago - by showing how important small campaign donations are. Thanks, HD! I know it wasn't your goal... then again, maybe it was. It's all money against Bush.
