Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement today about the death of nine firefighters in Charleston, South Carolina on Monday night.

"Elizabeth and I are simply heartbroken by the death of these nine heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Each loss is deeply painful to us, but most of all to those who loved them. We join all of South Carolina in mourning their loss and send our prayers and deepest sympathies to their families."

I know when the firefighters in Worcester,Ma died years ago it was a major blow to the community,and still hurts to think about.

My heart goes out to the families involved.
