Reid Says He Will Seek to End Debate on Immigration Bill

By ROBERT PEAR
Published: June 6, 2007

WASHINGTON, June 5 — The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, said
Tuesday that he would try to force an end to debate on a comprehensive
immigration bill, leaving the fate of the legislation in question.

Mr. Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said the Senate would vote Thursday on
whether to limit debate, a process that requires 60 votes to succeed.
He said he would pull the bill if he failed to get the necessary votes.

The majority leader said he wanted to complete work on the legislation
this week, and he suggested that Republicans were trying to “stall this
bill” with amendments. “When is enough enough?” he asked.

“People are looking for excuses on the Republican side to kill this bill,”
he said.

His announcement provoked an outcry from Republican supporters and
opponents of the bill, who said the Senate needed more time.

Fate of Senate immigration bill in doubt
Tue Jun 5, 2007 9:53PM EDT

By Donna Smith

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans on Tuesday accused
Democrats of trying to rush a vote on immigration reform, casting doubt
on the fate of the White House-backed bill that would tighten border
security and legalize millions of illegal immigrants.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he wanted to close debate on the
bill by this week's end despite Republicans' objections, which could doom
the fragile compromise legislation that backers say would help fix a
broken immigration system through which millions of illegal immigrants
have slipped into the United States.

1. If we have to wait another year and a half to get a good bill, so be it.
The fee's they want to charge these people is outrageous, $5000 when most probably don't make more than 8-12 thousand a year if they're lucky.

5. Correct me, if I am wrong, but isn't the $5,000 just for those who
chose to pursue citizenship. Those would also have to return to their home country and "get in the back of the line" for citizenship.

If those here illegally prefer, they can chose to simply have their presence legalized, so that they can live and work here legally without becoming citizens and would not have to pay the $5,000 or return home first.

6. You may be correct. But that opens them to exploitation.
Either way, fuck the GOP, wait em out. Reid is playing them, and he's doing it well, and he's right to do it. We'll have the White House and wider margins in both chambers come January 2009.

2. This bill must be rushed through so the elitists can keep their slave labor
An important bill with far reaching implications for our country and Sen Reid wants to rush it through?

Why is it that Congress will rush bills through in days or weeks such as Patriot Act, Iraq authorization, and this Immigration amnesty that will impact the USA for years? Or is that why few of the Senators even read the Intelligence assessment on Iraq invasion before they voted yes.
