The USA Today was done from Friday to Sunday.

I wanna see the post-debate ones.

6. The ABC one was done Tuesday thru Friday
so it's what, like 2 days older? I don't think the dates have anything to do with it, I think it's just because they're different polls. And I have no clue which one is more reliable.

17. Wow, Edwards is only at 8% in that one.
It's really hard to reconcile these polls. This latest one allegedly has a margin of error of +/- 5%, and even the outskirts of that range would still put it in conflict with the other poll.

I wonder how many people watched the CNN debate and if that is having an effect. Will be interesting to see how things develop.

34. These are not that far apart
You need to compare to the Democrat numbers which he posted as 34 - 29. Hillary's number is identical for all practical purposes. Obama may have moved up at Edwards' expense or it may be at the same spot, but the first poll's observed number was on the low end and the new poll on the high end.

The Edwards' numbers are troubling. It is way before the primaries - they can take heart that Kerry's 2003 numbers looked worse. The biggest problem is that the media has always hyed him beyond his numbers. He had only a small up-tick when he had his big entry into the race and when he bravely dealt with Elizabeth's diagnosis. He is polling first in Iowa now though - so that could give him the momentum in other states. (It might not, as he has been top there for so long, it may be expected.)

7. Oh, but didn't you hear, we can't vote for either one now because they
declared that they are christian on CNN, which means they're just right wing loonies who are going to turn us into a theocracy and ban all abortions and deport gays and jail atheists and make old testament rules the law of the land and force prayer in school and make us eat devilled eggs at weekly potlucks and force bible studies and persecute all of those dark-skinned terrorists over there in Iraq.....

:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

Pardon me, but I was just summarizing the slippery-slope hysterics of some of the posters tonight who feel that it was just an outrage that in a 2 year presidential campaign, some of our candidates had the GALL to sit on CNN for 15 minutes and mention that they were christians and that the teachings of Christ (you know, all that christian mumbo jumbo of love thy neighbor, love thine enemy) had an impact on how they felt about certain things.

13. I think Obama's numbers will go up a little post-debate
He's getting pretty good reviews and I think people are beginning to realize he's not going to sound like God reborn in these debates. Him and Hillary have been playing footsise with each other...probably moreso because they're good friends (and are looking to not damage any VP possibilities).

Obama and Edwards seem to divide some of the anti-Hillary vote. I wonder if some will jump on the Obama wagon to defeat Hillary.

19. That's a big unknown.
The vote for the war (actually co-sponsoring the ammendment, in Edwards' case) doesn't seem to bother Edwards supporters, so there would have to be other issues that would pull them to Obama.

24. Almost every other post is pushing that they are the only two.
It is rather disturbing to many of us.

The "inevitability" factor that permeates our party this year may not be a good thing.

It's tiring and discouraging. Especially for those us going through religious crises right now...all of them are preaching.

Edited on Tue Jun-05-07 01:33 AM by antiimperialist
Both the WAPO and Gallup poll were taken 2 or 3 days apart. Are you going to tell me that something happened in three days that gave Obama a suddent huge boost? And notice the huge number of Independents polled in this gallup polls, although Gallup used the fancy "Independents who lean Democratic" label to cover it up. Mark Penn points out that this is a way too large number of Independents to be used in a sample.

31. What Mark Penn does is admit to Hillary's severe electability problems
Independents (and Repukes) cannot stand Hillary... We need at least a majority of the former to come over to our side in the Fall. She's virtually unelectable. Now her campaign admits it.

27. CORRECTION: Obama 30, Hillary 29, Gore 17, Edwards 11
So the subject line of the original post is misleading.

This poll basically tells us that the race for the Dem nomination is still wide open.

It also tells us that right now, Rudy Giuliani would beat Hillary Clinton by 7 points.

Al Gore is still showing very strong, despite his repeated claims that he has no plans to run.

Just imagine what his numbers would look like if he announced his candidacy! :)

36. And Gore is trending UP!...
Normally you'd expect over time a candidate that's stil sitting out to trend down as the other candidates get more face time, and one theorizes they aren't going to get in. But him being at 17 at this point is pretty significant. If it gets over 18 next poll, then I think we can do some serious speculation on him entering the race!

...the more his numbers will go up. My died in the wool Republican brother told me on Sunday that he liked Obama, does not have a candidate yet, and could vote for Obama. If you knew my brother, you'd know that is proof positive that Obama can attract Republicans as well as Independents. Obama is the winning choice!

And we know Rasmussen is the most accurate right? :-)

Anyway, since this is definitely an outlier among recent polls we will need to see if a trend is developing or this is a blip...also fallout from the debate will show up in the next set of polls!

Obama did well in the last debate...not Hillary well ;-)...but more decisive than in the first one for sure...

I know people think these debates are a waste of time, but they do get these folks in the groove for the general...so they are useful in that regard!

43. Looks like its time for me to give more to Obama in $$$$ and campaigning...
1st of all, I don't believe the polling...too much right wing influence...Frank Luntz is one for example that I don't trust anything coming out of his mouth and the truth is the right-wingers are desperately trying to push the Hillary ticket because they know if she's the nominee (and the polling can show "she's the one") then they have a shot at the White House.

I think Obama rocks and Hillary getting the nomination will spell GOP victory....Nothing personal particularly against her, but I'd say over half the Dems I know can't stand her and won't vote for her and Republicans I know who are disgusted with Bush and would vote Dem in '08, won't if its her. Same for Indy's I know. But every one of those people think Obama is a good choice. That folks right there translates into who will win. Don't need official polls to figure that one out.

51. Maybe because he is the best person for the job?
Gore has not ruled out being a candidate ever again. Specifically, he has not explicitly ruled out seeking the Democratic nomination for President in 2008.

Contrast with 4 years ago, when Gore said (I think it was already at the end of 2002) that he would not seek the nomination for 2004.

Right now Gore is keeping his options open, watching how the pre-season goes ...
