Thank God one politician has the courage to support gay marriage
If Republican SF mayor Gavin Newsome can support gay marriage, why can’t the front running Democratic candidates support gay marriage? Certainly they have more courage than a Republican mayor.

From sfgate.com:

"It's a personal moment and an incredible historic event. It's hard to describe how that feels," said Broaddus, who met Wells in college 11 years ago in a women's studies class. "We've been together so long and have known we wanted to spend our lives together. To actually do it is incredibly profound and wonderful."

<snip>
"It reminds me how important rituals are in our lives," Maloney said afterward, standing beside his new husband, whom he met at a San Francisco cafe 14 years ago. "As gay men, we've been denied these rituals. I thought it would be political, but it was quite emotional."

Nance's hands shook as he showed a small crowd the rings they'd re- exchanged during the ceremony. The bands bore images from their lives together: a cup of coffee to honor their meeting place, the American Sign Language symbol for "I love you," and another symbol for "growth and forever."

4. He is indeed a Dem

The confusion may arise because he was the farther right of the two candidates in December's election; his opponent, Supervisor Matt Gonzalez, is a Green. Thus, SF Repukes (both of them :-) ) backed Newsom under the "lesser of two evils" theory.

Edit: It is highly unlikely that Al Gore will ever travel anyplace to campaign for a Repuke!!

2. Republican?
The race there was between a Democrat and a Green with the Democrat winning as I recall. Did something happen out there that I hadn't heard of?

5. The criticism from the Green candidate basically said that...
...a Democrat in SF was the equivalent of a Republican elsewhere in the nation. Lots of 'progressives' didn't care for him. Regardless, kudos to him.

7. Supporting gay marriage in San Francisco?
Not to disparage anyone because it is an admirable position for anyone to take in the face of the recent onslaughts against gay marriage. But in the pantheon of geographical political risk taking this is right up there with a Texas politician supporting the NRA.

8. Or just make the candidate who supports it frontrunner by supporting him
A Presidential candidate comes along that supports the issue, and we work as hard as we can to marginalize him, then complain about how there's no "frontrunner" that supports the issue.

Seems a little ironic to me.

10. Newsome's a Dem -- and has made a good start as mayor
But, you know, for the mayor of San Francisco to support gay marriage isn't exactly a profile in courage.
