I think the war funding bill was entirely a setup for 2008
I really believe that the Democrats are are planning to run in 2008 with the war being the focal point of the campaign. They expect things will only get worse, and the expectation is that whoever the Republican nominee is, they will most likely campaign on the continuation of the war on terror, vis-a-vis Iraq. I believe this vote was a result of craven political calculation, and it shows that they are just as willing to use our troops as pawns as much as the Republicans are. A withdrawal before the election will throw off their election strategy. This tells me that there will be nothing done to end this war before the election, period.

1. That's as good an explanation as any I've heard.
What the Dems did makes NO SENSE, politically or morally - if the agenda is to bring the troops home AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. They are not challenging B*sh. They're kicking the rock down the road.

2. Very risky, especially if a Repub or Third-Party candidate for Prez
Edited on Sun May-27-07 09:29 AM by wienerdoggie
manages to show true leadership on the issue. Obama, Hillary, and Edwards have all shown some, but unfortunately no one takes Dems as seriously on the issue as they would a Repub. This could really backfire. I hope that is not what they are doing. Ending the war has to be a bipartisan effort, it really shouldn't be that political--and Dems should rally folks to our party because of ALL THE OTHER THINGS Democrats stand for.

3. I hope they weren't that stupid or moronic to think that
Because it would mean most of the dems in congress are morons and brain-dead. It would mean they are more than willing to let our troops and Iraqis die in order to get reelected.

It would mean they are worse than rethugs, because we except that party to give a shit about our people in Iraq, and to give less than a shit about the Iraqi people themselves.

It's time for the dems to admit they are cowards and too spineless to even stand up to someone with a 28%, or less, approval rating.

To admit they couldn't really make themselves follow what has become the will of the majority and fucking just get our troops home.

4. hope hinges upon truth...
and truth must be fixed so society can function. If 'war in iraq' is exposed as fake, then it resets focus on 911, which brings up the 2k election!
the hinges are rusty and slapped together with tape and scrap metal, but they must hold, or else!
the sanctity of womenhood depend upon the pedestal standing proud- the war against terrorism keeps white women pure, and the race strong!

8. The Occupation will be an utter disaster in 2008
It already is, but the escalation will only cause more US soldier casualties. Th genie is out of the bottle.

Stopping the Occupation is going to be incremental, much like Vietnam. Even though the majority of the American public is against the war, it's going to take time to finally legislate a veto-proof end.

10. There's no other logical reason
The Democratic Congress had all the power they needed to bring the war to a screeching halt -- and refused to use it. Their spineless bleating about "not supporting the troops" never made any sense, as it was the great Decider (Divider) who would have been cutting off funding with his veto.

11. the new president will have to take care of getting us out of there
bush can go back to his gameboy and his "legacy" and
leave the mess for the democrats to clean up. they do
it all the time.

what they don't realize is that we want action NOW and
are likely to remember it in the voting booth

12. Nov 08 will be more about war with Iran than Iraq. They know it and we
don't want to admit it.
