House increases money for police program

Tue May 15, 4:46 PM ET

WASHINGTON - The House on Tuesday voted to use a Clinton-era
program to put 50,000 more police officers on U.S. streets, despite
complaints from some Republicans that the program is still
unproven.

The House voted 381-34 to raise the authorization level for the
Community Oriented Police Services program, also known as COPS,
from $1.047 billion annually to $1.15 billion annually through
fiscal year 2013.

That increase, lawmakers said, would mean an additional 50,000
police officers on the streets over the next six years.

"This bill will reinvigorate a highly successful initiative that has
suffered from years of cuts during the Republican-led Congress,"
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
