VoteVets - "Our New Ad: You wanted it, you got it"
Edited on Wed May-09-07 12:51 PM by CarolNYC
From VoteVets today:

Dear VoteVets.org Supporter,

Over the past few months, the most consistent question we've gotten in emails and on blogs is, "When's your next ad coming out?" Well, you wanted it... you got it!

Today, we're launching a massive, half-million dollar ad blitz, featuring - for the first time on the paid airwaves - George Bush's former commanders on the ground in Iraq. In the ads, they challenge the notion that the President listens to commanders, and another featuring retired General Wesley Clark and an Afghanistan veteran, makes clear that the war in Iraq has not made America more secure.

View the first ad here | https://secure.democracyinaction.com/dia/organizations/iavapac/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=1383&t=GoodNewOne.dwt">Donate Here

The first in the series of three ads features VoteVets.org Advisory Board Member, Major General (ret.) John Batiste, who was commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division from August 2002-June 2005. During this timeframe, he conducted combat operations in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Batiste twice voted for President Bush and is a lifelong Republican.

If you like this ad, then you're going to love what we have coming up in about a week, from Major General Paul Eaton. And, then the ad featuring General Wesley Clark after that. That's fitting, because it is General Clark who paved the way for other retired brass to speak out.

Here's the deal, though. We're pouring a half-million dollars towards airing these ads in states and districts where Senators and Representatives are very close to abandoning the President on Iraq. We're going to pull out all the stops to ensure they start to support the troops. If you like what you see, then please donate so we can raise enough to air these ads on networks, nationally. We're going to need to raise another $100,000 to get all of our ads on the air nationally, and really hold lawmakers' feet to the fire on the war.

https://secure.democracyinaction.com/dia/organizations/iavapac/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=1383&t=GoodNewOne.dwt">Donate here to air these ads nationally

For too long, the President has maintained that he's just listening to commanders on the ground, which is utterly false. These ads set the record straight, directly from the mouths of those men. The President isn't listening, he hasn't listened, and he hasn't shown an interest in listening to commanders on the ground in Iraq. If the President won't listen to commanders, then Congress must. They must force about a surge in diplomacy, and not allow a war without end.

If you're with us, then help us raise the necessary funds to get these ads up on the air.

Thank you for supporting the Voice of America's 21st Century Patriots!

Sincerely,

Jon Soltz

4. WTF???
Wes Clark and VoterVets are still working on changing the hearts and minds of Americans and exerting pressure to keep public opinion against the Bush administration, which in turn can mean more pressure on congress to do the right thing? :wow:

Kudos to them!

Action from the likes of them will be seen as nothing but credible and will have an effective result on this country and the policies being practice!

7. from the AP Story
"I am outraged, as are the majority of Americans. I'm a lifelong Republican, but it's past time for change," retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste told reporters in a conference call. "Our strategy in Iraq today is more of the same, a slow grind to nowhere which totally ignores the reality of Iraq and the lessons of history. Our president ignores sound military advice and surrounds himself with like-minded and compliant subordinates."

Batiste and Paul Eaton, also a retired major general, are featured in the ads by VoteVets.org. They challenge the president's argument that he listens to his commanders on the ground in Iraq. Batiste and Eaton, both former commanders on the ground, said the president's Iraq policies endanger U.S. security.

"The fact is, the president has never listened to the soldiers on the ground effectively," said retired NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark, who ran for president in 2004. "This administration is not listening to the troops and is not supporting them."

Other veterans promoted the campaign at a news conference in Manchester, the start of a six-state publicity tour targeting Sens. John Sununu of New Hampshire, Susan Collins of Maine, Norm Coleman of Minnesota and John Warner of Virginia, plus nine congressmen. All are Republicans.

(snip)

Brandon Friedman, a 29-year-old Army veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, said the president's policy is all wrong.

"I think all troops would like to see the government in Iraq succeed, but I think that many troops don't think that this is the way to go about doing that," said Friedman, a Republican who served in the 101st Airborne Division.

(snip)

The House members targeted by the new ads are Mary Bono of California, Phil English of Pennsylvania, Randy Kuhl and James Walsh of New York, Jo Ann Emerson of Missouri, Timothy Johnson of Illinois, Fred Upton of Michigan and Michael Castle of Delaware.

10. Good enough to pay for
I just tossed in a few $$$.

However, for those who would like to contribute in another way, I suggest that we all support VoteVets' initiative:

Stop Iran War

The signatures matter both to let bush know that we demand a real change in course, and also to prove to possible large donors that VoteVets means business. This is very important to getting other ads on the air. Got time? Please sign the petition.

11. Even @%ucker Carson said this evening that these ads would be highly effective.
Much more so than anything a Congress-critter could say. His panel agreed with him.

They think this will really put pressure on The Republicans to switch to the Democratic side.

:)

13. Tucker said that?
Wow! He never makes a positive mumble.

Someone at MyDD made the suggestion that the DCCC or DSCC fund this group, but I disagreed. They can be most effective by playing outside the lines. They are the voices of the troops.

Take that Karl Rove! The Troops!

14. Ad campaign targets Collins
http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/011738.html

WASHINGTON — An advocacy group of Iraq veterans unveiled an advertising campaign today that criticizes President Bush for failing to listen to military commanders and targets Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Susan Collins.

The key phrase in the $500,000 advertising campaign from the group VoteVets.org, which claims 40,000 members nationwide, is: “Protect America, not George Bush.”

The ad campaign targets four senators and 10 House members who are all Republican. The ads were announced a day after Democratic Rep. Tom Allen declared his candidacy to unseat Collins.

The series of ads features three retired commanders: Maj. Gen. John Batiste and former Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton each served in Iraq, and former Gen. Wesley Clark served in the Balkans and Afghanistan.
