CNN POLL: Ghouliani tanking bigtime - lead down to 2 points
Edited on Mon May-07-07 05:20 PM by jefferson_dem
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A year and a half before the 2008 presidential election, Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John McCain are leading the Republican pack, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll out Monday.

Asked whom they would most likely support for the Republican nomination, 25 percent of people who identified themselves as Republicans or leaning Republican cited the former mayor of New York and 23 percent cited the senator from Arizona.

Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who has not said he is running, was cited by 13 percent; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by 10 percent; former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich -- who has not said he is running -- by 9 percent; former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore by 3 percent; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee by 2 percent, Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo by 2 percent; former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson by 2 percent; California Rep. Duncan Hunter by 2 percent; Rep. Ron Paul of Texas by 1 percent.

The CNN Opinion Research Corporation telephone poll was carried out Friday through Sunday and included 414 registered voters who described themselves as Republicans or as independents who lean Republican. The margin of error for the poll is plus-or-minus 5 percent.

2. I'm surprised Ron Paul isn't polling better...
Edited on Mon May-07-07 05:16 PM by Alexander
He's the only Republican who seemed to stand out at the debate, and I think he'd appeal to the Goldwater Republicans.

Then again I have something of a libertarian streak, so maybe I'm biased.

7. I see him getting the anti-war Republican vote if Hagel doesn't jump in.
And yes, there are anti-war Republicans.

8. Yes there are, and they are a small minority.
That's why warmongers like Dame Rudy, McCain and Romney lead the pack in the primary polls.

9. I'm not sure they'll be that small in 2008.
Granted, I think Paul has a better chance of being the Libertarian nominee, but my gut feeling is that the base will want to separate themselves from the disaster known as Iraq.

12. 58% of Repubs think Bush is doing a sweet job in Iraq
BS News/New York Times Poll. April 20-24, 2007. N=1,052 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3 (for all adults). RV = registered voters

"Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling the situation with Iraq?"
Approve / Disapprove / Unsure
ALL adults 24 / 71 / 5
Republicans /58 / 34 / 8

And what part of the 34% of Repubs who think Bush is doing a shitty job in Iraq STILL SUPPORT THE WAR, just not the way Bush is handling it? A large chunk I would imagine.

3. These national polls mean nothing. The real news is McCain's kicking Giuliani's ass in Iowa, NH & NC
I suspect the fight will come down to McCain vs. Romney, and Romney will win (and it will be UGLY).
