Edwards Statement on House Passage of Hate Crimes Bill
Edwards Statement on House Passage of Hate Crimes Bill
John Edwards for President
Friday, May 4, 2007

----
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement praising the House of Representatives for passing the Hate Crimes Bill yesterday.

"As Americans, we should mourn the need for hate crimes legislation, just as we lament the fact that 25 Americans are victims of hate crimes every day. Yet today, we should also applaud the House of Representatives for taking an important and historic step in helping law enforcement ensure that all Americans have the same protections from hate crimes.

"Today, the House showed in an overwhelming vote, that it will not tolerate discrimination of any form, when it strengthened the ability of law enforcement to investigate and prosecute hate crimes based on race, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or gender identity. President Bush should back down from his wrong-headed veto threat and work with Congress to enact this important legislation to show that Americans will not tolerate hate crimes of any kind."

3. Even though I've been leaning towards Obama,
I'm becoming quite impressed by Edwards. The thing that concerns me is that Nancy of Starlight News has acted like he wouldn't be able to win. I don't know if that would be due to fraud for the 5th time by the Repubs or what.

5. Electability has been on my mind...
Then I saw the Penn video and it really struck home with me. Who decides if someone is electable or not? We do! (Election fraud aside. -- which does concern me.) I confess to being alarmed that Edwards has been targeted by the right as an object of concern.

2. If Bush vetoes this bill, then the Congress needs to slam it down his
throat with a unanimous override.

4. Assuming we can get the Republicans on our side for it
I'm not betting on that happening anytime soon.

6. Republicans believe that murdering gays and the transgender is a Holy commandment
They even oppose school rules against bullying and harassing students for being gay.

A sick religion and a sick group of believers!

I am Catholic; got a problem with it? My church doesn't tell me that murdering people is OK. You're talking out of your ass. Without even realizing it, your words are just as bigoted and close-minded as those who you profess to hate.

9. There are a lot of gay Catholics at the local MCC Church
Edited on Sun May-06-07 10:39 AM by IndianaGreen
They were driven out of the Church they loved by a Church stuck on the Dark Ages.

BTW, my post was about Republicans. You are the one that injected the Catholic Church into the discussion. Why?

12. I injected my denomination into the discussion because you called Christianity a "sick religion"
Is not Catholicism part of the Christian religion? Do you still stand by your ridiculous statements?

13. I was talking about Republicans. Why are you defending them?
And I stand by my statements.

But since you chose to inject your religion into this discussion, you can read below what the head of your religion has to say. You seem to have forgotten that we are not the ones that started a campaign of hatred and intolerance towards LGBTs, as the Papal-blessed current government of Poland is carrying out, but we sure as hell are going to end it by insisting that religion be confined to the four walls of the church, and that the Bisphop of Rome should stop trying to dictate his medieval views on the world.

Pope says gay unions are false
Sees a weakening of marriage
By Michael Paulson, Globe Staff | June 7, 2005

Pope Benedict XVI, offering his first detailed critique of gay unions since his elevation to the pontificate six weeks ago, yesterday described same-sex marriages as ''pseudo-matrimony."

In a speech to a conference on families held by the Diocese of Rome, Benedict made clear in strong language that he intends to pursue the hard-line defense of traditional Catholic teachings that made him controversial in his role as Pope John Paul II's chief enforcer of church doctrine.

''The various forms of the dissolution of matrimony today, like free unions, trial marriages and going up to pseudo-matrimonies by people of the same sex, are rather expressions of an anarchic freedom that wrongly passes for true freedom of man," he said, speaking at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.

<snip>

Benedict's opposition to homosexuality is longstanding. In 1986, Ratzinger signed another doctrinal document declaring that ''It is only in the marital relationship that the use of the sexual faculty can be morally good. A person engaging in homosexual behavior therefore acts immorally."

Vatican condemns Spain gay bill

The Vatican, under the new leadership of Pope Benedict XVI, has condemned a Spanish government bill allowing marriage between homosexuals.

The bill, passed by parliament's Socialist-dominated lower house, also allows gay couples to adopt.

A senior Vatican official described the bill - which is likely to become law within a few months - as iniquitous.

He said Roman Catholic officials should be prepared to lose their jobs rather than co-operate with the law.

The bill would make Spain the first European country to allow homosexual people to marry and adopt children.

Pope assails Canada's laws allowing same-sex marriage

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict hit out Friday at Canada for allowing same sex marriage and abortion, saying they result from Catholic politicians ignoring the values of their religion.

"In the name of tolerance your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse, and in the name of freedom of choice it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children," the Pope told a group of bishops from Ontario.

Such laws, he said, are the result of "the exclusion of God from the public sphere."

16. Where did the pope say it was OK to "murder gays"?
Pretty much EVERY mainstream religion is against gay marriage. This isn't news. It also isn't tantamount to saying that Christianity advocates the "murder" of gays. In fact, it is far from it.

10. I wouldn't go that far
More that some of them feel that way, at least the real reichwingers, but the rest are more afraid of the bigots like the Dobsonites that put them in power.

15. I would, do you deny that the head of the Catholic doctrine has declared
homosexuality to be out and out evil and must be stamped out? Believe me, I have heard that little sermon more times that I care to recall from not only the catholic churches....I am not impressed with most religious views, they preach so called love they neighbor and in the same breath make sure to tell their congregations just what neighbor is worthy of that love..

I want out leaders to stop using their belief in a God that may or may not be to ensure people believe them able enough to lead this country.....and if this country was smart, they would outlaw our government officials from using such for political gain...it's beyond pathetic.

and was pleased that he addressed the racial divide and the role it plays in various things (economic, education, etc.).
