If Afghan villagers are somehow construed to be not civilians in Harvey's over-fevered brain pan, then using his "logic," one could say that the people in the WTC towers were also not civilians, and that the September 11 attacks were just another action in an ongoing undeclared war.

Which actually fits in pretty well with the narrative the Republicans are desperately trying to hold together. The September 11 attacks were a crime, not an act of war, and should have been treated as such. By reacting to them as an act of war, we've gotten our nation bogged down in two quagmires, killing dozens of thousands of people and squandering hundreds of billions of dollars. How much different would things be if instead of launching "pre-emptive" wars we had launched investigations to develop the evidence, identify the surviving perpetrators, and bring them to justice?

But then we wouldn't have gotten all those pretty pictures for the teevee, and the Bush administration and its cronies couldn't have emptied the Treasury into their overstuffed pockets, and what's the fun of that?
