Edwards tome latest addition to campaign bookshelf

Edwards is out with the latest contribution to the library of works penned by 2008 presidential candidates.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Sen. John Edwards is out with the latest contribution to the library of works penned by 2008 presidential candidates: "Ending Poverty in America: How to Restore the American Dream," which hit bookstores Monday.

The North Carolina Democrat, who until recently headed the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina, is credited as editing the book, along with Marion Crain, who replaced Edwards at the Center, and UNC professor Arne Kalleberg. The book is a collection of articles addressing various aspects of social and economic policy and features a contribution from fellow unsuccessful vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp, a former GOP congressman and Housing Secretary under former President George H.W. Bush.

Edwards authored the book's final article, also titled "Ending Poverty in America," an 11-page essay offering a number of policy proposals and personal anecdotes....

1. I'll get to this book as soon as I can, but it brings to mind Michael
Harrington's book, THE OTHER AMERICA.

If anyone has that at your local library, it's really worth a look.

It argues for a planned economy, of course, and brilliantly so.

Health insurance is not really a separate issue from the alleviation of poverty. They are intrinsicallly tied, IMO, and Edwards and his strategists are brilliant for putting them in front of voters' consideration in this way.

There are far too many uninsured and therefore vulnerable people who have no health coverage because they are poor.

Senator Clinton, when she was First Lady, made substantial and worthy gains in this debate. I think a lot of our Democrats are hot on the trail of a comprehensive policy that will appeal to voters in a way that none of the GOP candidates' programs will.

2. We don't need health insurance in this country, we need health care.

the distinction. So are most Americans, in fact:

Try going for the big picture once in a while.

13. I am going for the BIG picture.
Health insurance in this country is tied to having a job. Why? If you lose or change jobs, the health insurance is affected. It should not matter.
Let's have health care tied to being alive instead.

It is you who is being short sighted.

15. The book. The OP concerned a book. You appear to have missed
both the big picture and the point at hand.

With enormous pleasure, RC, I'm putting you on my Ignore list, and that's where you're going to stay.

Adios.

14. No, I haven't. I found this note yesterday in CNN's "The Ticker,"...
and it was the first I'd heard of the book. I do appreciate Edwards' addressing the issue of poverty, and it's interesting that this is a collection of pieces from a variety of sources, ending with his own -- which makes it different from the other campaign books. I think I'll check it out on Amazon.

5. Talking about bookshelves -
I've read that if every available (indoor) wall in Edwards's new house were fitted floor to ceiling with bookshelves to accomodate multiple copies of "Ending Poverty in America" (including the walls in the Recreation Barn), those books laid end-to-end would easily circle the globe once with enough editions left over to trace the route of I-95 from Atlanta, Georgia to just north of Boston!

7. Stop it with the HairCut already........Clarkie1! That's just plain silly!
I'm much more interested in Edwards' answer as to what he really knew while sitting on that intelligence committee, according to Sen. Durbin....and if he knew that the intelligence was faulty, why did he still vote for the IWR (the one Durbing Voted no against), and why did he vote against both the Levin and the Durbin amemdments....and why hasn't he shared the same as Durbin has shared with us.....and why did Edwards wait till Nov 2005 to apologize? Guess I'm more issue oriented!

23. Of course it's silly. It's quite silly to spend $400 for a haircut.
Of course there are "bigger" issues. Of course the issues you mention are far more important when analyzing Edwards values, judgment, and integrity. Issues far more important to me than a $400 haircut.

Still, a man who spends $400 on his hair is not the kind of person I want as my president. It tells me something about him, and it turns me off. Perhaps if everyone in America lived a little less wastefully we could end poverty...for real.

Why, it's almost as if you intended to insult John Edwards.

What I find hilarious is when the cattiest of posters claims to be issue oriented!

the doggiest of posters claim some sort of superiority to judge others, when they are really about nothing more than those they have their "fangs" pointed at! It is not a missed irony how that tends to work! :eyes:

18. More projection
Certain posters like to dog threads about a certain candidate and then claim they themselves are dogged.

What happened to your oath to quit pissing in the sandbox? Seemed you were doing so well keeping your poison contained. Feels like I haven't seen you in ages.....ah well....maybe you can hop back on the wagon and, this time, really beat this thing!

Good luck, you can do it! :hi:

Dead weight never ranks all that highly with me. But I must say, I do appreciate you helping keep this thread about Edwards book kicked! I think it's a fine edition and look forward to reading it. With your help more will be aware of it.

Funny how that works. It may even qualify as irony....

21. Not a problem!
I don't dislike Edwards (even if I don't feel he qualifies as President)...which is why I don't mind kicking this thread. I'm not sure why you would somehow believe that a book on poverty is something I wouldn't want advertised? Is that how you think or something?

And in reference to you "NEVER" thinking of me, "NEVER" being here to comment, and "NEVER" keeping me informed and "NEVER" keeping me in your good grace--That's not a problem either!

11. Recommended. A good post, and timely, and it's putting a book choice
in front of readers with a political bent.

The hope is to enrichen dialogue. My guess is that the book will do just that.
